Dorado Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Finally had the chance to fish the Zoom trick worm and it was love at first sight. Had tons of bites but never had a solid hookset. I think I was using a 4/0 EWG What hook size and style will give a tx-rig newbie the best hooksets? My buddy who works at BPS recommended a 3/0 Gamma G-Lock and a member who turned them on to me recommended a 3/0 Gamma Offset Worm Hook. It will be forever since I get to fish next so I'm interested in getting a consensus. These worms have so much action! As always, thanks in advance for the advice. I can't stop learning from this site. Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 I don't think there is such a thing as "the best", I've fished trickworms with EWGs, Js, straight, offset and it's pretty much the same for me, I swear I see no difference at all in the hook ratio between hook styles. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 13, 2017 I use a 2/0 EWG Eagle Claw Magworm when I'm fishing a weightless trick worm. Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 Straight shank round bend 2/0 is my weapon of choice. I would also suggest looking at Bass Assassin's Tapout worm, slightly fatter so it cast farther unweighted. Quote
Jason Penn Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 i use a 2/0 offset. i probably fish a t-rigged trick worm with a 3/8 weight more than any other plastic. 1 Quote
thinkingredneck Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Had the best luck with a Gamakatsu 3/0 round bend offset. Tru-turn worked well but can be dull. Straight shank work well but hang up easily in thick stuff. EWG seem to hold best, but can cause occasional missed strikes. IMO: The easier it is to hook the fish, the easier it is to hang up. The more securely it holds, the harder it is to hook the fish. The offset hook seems the best compromise to me. I fish the Trickworm Texas rigged every time I go out . 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 If you consider a Senko in the "trickworm" catagory and Texas rigged, I use a 4.0 Gamakatsu EWG for a number of reasons. It is a thin wire hook and saves your Senko (if rigged properly). It is a better bite detector and results in fewer deep hooks of fish if you are not proficient at weightless Senko, slack line fishing. I used to use the 3.0 but with guide clients, I was seeing too may deep hooked fish. I use 3.0 to 5.0 actually because I change my hook depending on conditions (wind/depth/cover etc.) but the 4.0 is my go to. I also use the Gamakatsu Skip Gap if I am going to be skipping cover or docks a lot. I actually have different rods rigged with different hooks on deck at all times. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 I use 2/0 straight shank Gammakatsu's for lighter worms. Quote
Jerryj33 Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 The worm hook I choose is equally dependent on the line and rod I'm using as it is the worm. If you're using a softer rod and mono, a 2/0 trokar ewg would be perfect for a trick worm. Braid to flouro I might think about a Trokar straight shank light wire finesse hook or a 3/0 ewg. Quote
boostr Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 I use a 2/0 or a 3/0 VMC round bend offset worm hook. Quote
