Hiyas, just joined up on the prompting of a friend > sup Chuck :)

K I have a Triton1650SC that I bought in Feb.

2005 boat and trailer with an 2004 9.9 Mrec Four Stroke Big Foot on trim. ::)

Guy bought it last year new then traded it this year. Kept his motor and they put on this 9.9 to sell.

Price was affordable and I figured I could upgrade the engine later > I was on the water and that was the idea. So I'm putting along slowly but PUTTING ALONG ;)

So now I'm in a position to buy up.

I am hearing that 2 stroke engines by far run faster then the 4 strokes.

My dealer tends to agree, so I am considering a 2007 Merc 2 stroke 50 with oil injection so there would be no probs on using my built in tank and NO MIX on both motors (I'm having the 9.9 converted to an extended arm kicker for HP limit lakes and to have access to the Strip Pits at Pyramid State Park and Peabody Coal.(Must be under 10HP)

Can some of you provide some feedback on this please.

My boat is rated to 60HP, but I fish several lakes that have 50HP limits.

The 2 stroke I am considering is like $2000+ cheaper then a 4 stroke.

They also only have a yr of warranty as oppossed to 2 or 3 yrs on a 4 stroke :-[

But my dealer (Nameoki Marine) insist they are rock solid motors

BTW I am in Illinois just east of the river from St Louis.

Any info would help, I want to get a bigger motor on asap so I can go out safley on bigger lakes and the river as well.

Thanx

The thing which would concern me is the type of 2 stroke.  If it is a carb or EFI then there are several lakes which won't let them on because of EPA ratings.  I'd look around at the lakes I fish and be sure that this motor is allowed.  If it is allowed, $2000 is a lot of money to save.

Hmmmm No it is not EFI Sports the old Carb.

Then again, so does the 9.9 I have, even tho it's a 4 stroke, they dont come EFI below 25HP.

This is what the dealer is told me.

So if this is an issue, I hope it doesn't mean both motors may be a problem.

I have not heard any talk of Carbs being not allowed > Till now.

But I will check into it!

Thanx

The motor law depends on where in the country you are. here in Pa there are only HP limits. not epa limits.

The 50 sounds good. If you fish lake that have a 50 hp limit, then you get a 60 it would put you out on those lake. normaly I say put the max hp on a boat, but 10hp differenace and lets you fish the lakes you want. Get the 50HP

You need to check the state (and federal if using federal lakes) laws on use of two stroke engines.  There are many different regulations depending on the area you live.  For instance, Lake Tahoe does not allow carburated two strokes.  Some have a total ban on two strokes.   If it was left up to the Bluewater Network, there would not be a two stroke engine allowed anywhere.  Evinrude has convinced the feds to take another look at their E-tec engines and propose legislation to relax many of it's bands with the E-tec.

As for two strokes in general, they will be around a long time with the newer technologies being developed.  As for carburated two strokes, they will eventually be totally banned/phased out but in most areas, you will probably have worn the motor out anyway before that happens.

Snow mobiler's are already suffering where they have to use four stroke motors.  They see what twice the weight and half the power does.  Yea, the four stroke works but it sucks when it comes to performance compared to a two stroke.

I live in Illinois, West Central, 15 mins from Downtown St Louis, so if anyone from Illinois can add info, I thank them in advance...

Gonna do my homework tho... ;)

Thank You so much for the input thus far guys.

Much appreciated!!!

Hey Chuck! :)

Yeah brother, seems like I am in the right place for ANY info I may need.

Heck I been strugglin with back pain from running my TM and last night after looking at the boat Fluke built, I do believe I will be sinking an insert to recess my foot pedal.

As soon as I get this motor on and goin, you and I are going fishing!!!!

I'll get over next week and get a Missouri license, you try to get an Illinois so we can fish either side of the Muddy. :)

Dave

PS: I know we are all about kikn Bass but Spoonies are in till May 15th.

Then she runs again from Sept 15th thru Dec 15th.

With my new rig and LD's new rig, plus ole Grandma we got 3 rigs up.

Plenty, 5 of us have passed Granny around, very tiring so one share rod usually is fine. :)

I did a search of Illinois Department of Natural Resources and found nothing on the use of 2-stroke outboards. If I were you I would place a phone call to DNR and personally talk to someone thus eliminating any doubt.

Just for your info BPS has the EFI 50 2 Stroke brand new for $38-$3900, went to the new BPS store in Olathe Ks, and looked at one. The sales man said that was their regular price in all their stores.

;) Thanx catt good idea..

Just got off the phone with Region 4 and it seems there are no such restriction in Illinois.

Also talked to the Missori State Water Patrol. They say there are no laws like this in effect over there either.

Sooo I seem to be OK in both states.

Yehaaaaaaa

Off to buy a motor.

Thanx for the help!
