56 crestliner Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Well i have another trolling motor quwstion. i bought the boat i posted about a while ago, today. and i am only going to be able to use a transom mount. so i am thinking about the minn kota maxum in a 55 lb. thrust. the boat is a 15 foot center consol boat its alluminum shallow v, its bow and stern are decked with pedistal seats. the floors are all aluminum and stainless.it has a 40 horse johnson on it. im not sure on the weight of the boat. But with this information how long will one deep cycle batterry last for one day with the maximizer? Also when buying the trolling motor is all the wiring to the battery included? I think i will buy a everstart deep cycle from wal mart probably size 29.\ thanks Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 11, 2007 Super User Posted April 11, 2007 Be sure to check out the reserve amps on the battery. If they only talk cold cranking amps, get something else. Get as close to 200 reserve amps as you can and it should be as strong at the end of the day as it is at the beginning. Quote
bassnleo Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 First, the length of time your battery will hold enough of a charge to run your tm will vary on how much you use the tm. I have owned 2 tm's that were 55 lb thrust, I found that one battery usually lasted all day but I did also have occasions on windy days where I used up my battery. What I actually did then was installed a second battery and wired them parallel, I never killed the batteries after that. As for the wiring coming with the motor, usually you will only get a few feet of wire. Your best bet is to run the wires from your battery to a recepticle, add a plug to the wires off the motor, plug it in and go. As aready mentioned, a higher reserve amp battery will last you longer. Lastly, I would definately put a 40 or 50 amp breaker on the positive wire. I have 50 amp breakers that will trip when they get too hot, they cool in a short period of time and reset. This will save you from burning up the motor should you have a day where your using it for long periods of time on high. Quote
Bass_junky Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I wouldn't waste my money on the everstarts. First i think they are onyl warranteed for 1 yr. If you are willing to spend a little more money you might check out Trojan batteries. I have had great success with these and have used them over an entire weekend on my old 12 v tm. I don't remember what the ah's are but that is easily found. I recently bought two new ones the 220's for 131.00 each. Quote

jeepcrazy Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I never had any trouble with my EverStart, but I just picked up a pretty cool alternative today: U31TMX by Interstate Batteries It's actually an industrial deep cycle designed for floor scrubbers. It fits in size 29 battery boxes, but is extremely powerful for the price. Specs quoted to me by their Industrial Division were 145 rate AH with 225 minutes @ 25amps According to the guys I worked with at the local distributor (all fishermen) those numbers were very conservative, and they make an even bigger one for the truly adventurous. Price? $109 That was a good 40 bucks cheaper than the similarly spec'd Trojan I looked at, and way cheaper than the (not apples to apples, I know) Blue Top I looked at. I'll post a thread on a real review later in the summer after I've run it awhile. In the meantime it looks like the battery is a good deal! Quote

jeepcrazy Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Local distributor. Awesome guys to deal with. I know the retailers are a little higher, but they have distribution places all over. I had to drive a ways (an hour) but I think it was worth it! Quote
bassboy1 Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Would that local distributer have wholesale prices, or is that a higher than wholesale price. My dads shop uses interstate batteries exclusively, so he can get them for wholesale price. Is wholesale the 109? Quote
bassnleo Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Bassnleo where do you find circuit breakers like that? The local marine shop that I deal with carries them. I have heard of others here buying them elsewhere, I'm sure if you look on Bass Pro, Cabelas, or West Marine one of those sites should have them. If you cannot find them let me know, I'll check the names on mine and do a search and see if I cam find them. Quote

I've been buying batteries from those guys since I was a kid and they've never steered me wrong. I went in looking for one Optima Blue top and I left with two of these, and I ultimately spent about the same amount of money and I think I'm better off. No worries here. They're the size of a type 31, not a 29 though...realized that when I was installing them in the boat today. Quote
