h1x71 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 I have a 70hp johnson on my boat and it came without power trim. when I put it on the trailor I manualy have to flip a leaver and pull it up and lock it . The man I bought it from said to run with it all the way down? It has holes to adjust the tilt of the motor but im afraid to try anything new do to damage? what do you guys think motor up or down? also should it be locked in place while running or not locked? I have been told that being not locked is better so if any thing was to get run over it would be more foregiving? don Quote
bassboy1 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Those holes are to trim it. You need to experiment with all of them to see which is the best compromise for hole shot and speed. Also, dont ever let it rest on the doohicky that is supposed to hold it all the way tilted. Even the OMC manual states that that is for beaching it only. If you need to tilt it to trailer, use a block of wood to hold it up on the ramp, and a transom saver the rest of the time. They are supposed to have the ability to snap loose even when locked down, as it would if you hit something. A steady pressure like running in reverse, will not trip the latch. If you are like most of us, it has long since broken, and you just have to reverse slowly, or hold the motor down. (On my 4. Couldn't do it on the 50) Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted April 7, 2007 Super User Posted April 7, 2007 Trying different tilt pin positions is not going to hurt the motor. Might even help peformance some by trying it in the next position of two out. You should never run the motor with it in the locked position. If you hit anything, it could do some serious damage to the motor and the boat with it locked down. The only time it may be necessary to lock it is when in reverse and as long as you don't try and give it too much gas that's not a problem either, all it's going to do is jump out of the water but goes right back down as soon as you let off. Pa Angler Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I would put the motor up and use a transom saver there's more weight on the transom with the motor unsupported and all the way down. The saver will connect to the lower unit and to the bottom of the trailer. Here's a site for savers. www.veveinc.com/shop/customer/home.php?cat=18 Quote
bassmaster8100 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I used to have a 70 that was like that, just move that pin in different places for your trim to see what works best, I would always leave my motor unlocked that way if I hit a log or something it wouldnt damage the transom. Also if you are interested in power trim BPS sells a nice kit to put power trim on thats what I ended up doing on the one I had. Quote
NJfishinGuy Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 as far as trim i believe the anti cavataion plate is suposed to be paralell to the bottom of the boat. also just see how the boat runs. should come on plane and be even bow up just a bit. if the nose it pushin in the water adjust it up and its doin a wheelie trim in down Quote
