FattyWnnaCookie Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Fishing into heavy cover, have a kast king assassin on a heavy 7'3 Berkley shock rod. Using 20 lb braid. My issue is not being able to cast rubber worms worth a dam. I have always had luck using rubber worms or other baits across the tops of lillies and in weed, but unless I add weight which constantly snags, my cast cant be more than about 10 or 15 feet. Whats my problem? I certainly would hate to switch to a lighter action rod in the case I catch something that will just snap my rod. Quote
FattyWnnaCookie Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Usually a small split shot. Thats all i have currently, but not an issue to buy others. I have just opted to take it off to relieve snagging. Is weight necessary? Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 With a heavy rod and a split shot as weight no wonder why you can't cast far, the rod doesn't "load". 2 Quote
FattyWnnaCookie Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 So what do I do now? Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 Go buy solid body toads like Zoom Horny Toad or hollow body frogs like Snag Proof that weight about 1/2 oz. The hollow body frog will have a double weedless hook. The solid body toad you need to rig according to the package instructions. Tom 2 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted September 12, 2017 Super User Posted September 12, 2017 An RI Skinny Dipper w/ heavy hook weighs in right around 1/2oz as well. I will most always fish one with a 1/16 or 1/32 steel weight pegged. The weight acts as a bumper of sorts to prolong the life of the plastic and makes the lure more weedless. Quote
sully420 Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 Go buy some lead bullet weights 1/4oz 1/2oz watch videos on how to texas rig and the hooks you need. It sounds like you're getting ready to take your first step in actual bass fishing learning about the correct techniques the correct tackle in the right way to fish it is what you need to do. In between this site and places like YouTube you'll be able to start getting results. 1 Quote
MichaelCopeland Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 Texas rig a Zoom Ol' Monster 10.5" worm weightless and weedless. Adjust the spool tensioner knob and the braking system of your Kast King Assassin reel to increase your distance. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted September 12, 2017 Super User Posted September 12, 2017 You could use heavier worms like 12 inch Manns Jelly worms . Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted September 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 13, 2017 Stop trying to cast into heavy cover. Get yourself some heavier weights based on the depth of the water you're fishing and slow down.. Pitch tex posed/t rigged plastics into every small hole or wider openings you can reach working your way back. If you are intent on casting into it, you must use the right equipment and baits to do what you want to do as others have explained. Mike 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 13, 2017 Long distance cast into heavy cover is asking for trouble. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 What "rubber" worm ya casting? Not all plastic worms are created equal Quote
Troy85 Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 You could texas rig with 1/4oz and peg the weight, that helps reduce weed hangups. You could also throw heavier worms, like a Yum Dinger or Senko, those are heavy and designed to be thrown weightless. I use them a lot in the summer, I'll throw them on the top of matted vegetation then drag them over the grass and let it fall into the holes. 1 Quote
