Super User Catt Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 OK Y'all ? I got my braided line & I got a bait caster I don't have a holes in my reel spool, I don't have the little peg, post, nipple or whatever y'all call it, & I don't want to use backing. How y'all attach to braid in a manner that doesn't allow the line to spin or turn on the spool? 1 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 I start either with some electrical tape, or a couple winds of mono, or I do a really quick reel to get the braid around several wraps (if using no backing). That last one is a hit or miss pile of frustration, though... Quote

You don't - sounds like braid isn't for you Sell it in the flea market or give it to some kid to use....or come off a few yards of that Big Game line and just spool it correctly 1 1 Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 Personally, I use plumbers tape to avoid any mess from adhesive. I reel my initial braid on tight as well. 2 2 Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 I thought about plumbers tape, but figured it would be too slick. I have a single roll of "nice" electricians tape I use for spools. It has less adhesive and gets less sticky than the cheap stuff. I also use it to cover my backing/mainline knot, I use braid as a backer and floro as my main line on most of my casting reels and a little tick of red tape becoming visible is a good reminder that I am coming up on my backing. MichaelCopeland Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I spooled mine up like the way @Glenn talked about in a video I watched. The only things I didn't do was use scotch tape or any tape for that matter and I don't have the spooling machine thing he used. I don't have the holes in my spool so it was a little tricky getting it started but once I did I manually turned the spool in the direction it would turn to reel in a few times making sure to keep it as tight as I could. Once I had enough wraps to start reeling the handle I put a pencil through the line spool hole and held it between my feet with the line coming off the spool from the back side of the spool. Worked pretty good for me. Here is the video I watched 1 Quote
bigturtle Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 tie your braid on normally, then put tape on top of it and tape it in place. Then wind it on tightly. Your initial loop will be held on by the electric tape, and subsequent wraps will have the tape to grip onto. 3 1 Quote
PAbasser927 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I put a wrap of painters tape around the spool, then a wrap of electrical tape around that. Painters tape so that it doesn't leave a mess of adhesive if I were to remove it, electrical because it is soft enough for the braid to "seat" into. Super easy. 1 Quote
JustinJ Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 Why would you not want to use backing? I fill spool about 1/3 of cheap mono rest with braid. On my punching/flipping rod I fill about 3/4 mono rest with braid. Quote

If not using a leader but tie direct it actually saves money putting on a full spool of braid. Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 Without any holes to tie to on the spool, I strongly suggest a few winds of mono backing. The tape can work, but I've found that a few winds of mono to be probably just as cheap, I know it won't leave any residue, gunk up the line, or slip. I've kinda just considered that a simple thing and have never tried to over-engineer what works. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted September 12, 2017 Super User Posted September 12, 2017 I don't really worry about residue, at least for e-tape. Even when it is years old it comes off very easily with alcohol. 2 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted September 12, 2017 Super User Posted September 12, 2017 I have a Daiwa Tatula with the SV spool, and I saw a video on youtube where Brett Ehrler said you don't need mono backing with braid on the SV spool, which I find true with 50# and up, but 30# and 40# braid really needs the mono backing or it will dig into itself something awful. Plus a spool of braid lasts quite a bit longer with mono backing, and it still gives me enough line for bass fishing so I throw roughly 30 yards of mono on, tie it to my braid with a double uni knot and I'm good to go. 1 Quote
