Birdman2136 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Hello new to the forums here and generally new to bass fishing. I am looking to purchase a flipping/pitching rod, but I want to do so on a budget. I'd like to spend around 50 bucks if possible. The two rods I've found so far are the Berkley Lighting Casting Rod or the Shimano Sellus Casting Rod. Any advice or insight will be greatly appreciated. Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Either will work... The Berkeley punches way above its weight class when you consider the price. Quote
Dtrombly Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Never used one personally but the Daiwa Aird X has nothing but great reviews on tacklewarehouse. $54.99 with free shipping Quote

I love my Daiwa reels. I'll be giving this rod a shot. Should I go heavy or med heavy? Quote

If your not going to be fishing very thick slop and staying under 1oz weights then I think the medium heavy will suffice. Otherwise I'd go heavy. Quote
Birdman2136 Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Thanks. Most lakes I fish don't have that thick of cover so I'll roll with the Med Heavy. Thanks again for showing me this rod. Exactly what I was looking for. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 Welcome aboard! Berkeley Lightning Rod Shock is a great rod at that price-point, even less $ at Walmart, but sounds like you're gonna go with the Daiwa, also good. Quote
Rollincoal420 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I know shakespeare doesn't get much love around here, their gx2 is available on a heavy action for $39. I just went through this search yesterday after I broke the top off another rod. It was also the only heavy rod I could find in a 6'6" length. (Besides a muskie rod heavy, cast. But it's handle was over 12" long. To long for my shortness) Quote

I actually purchased a medium shock spinning set up from WalMart for my finesse fishing. I really like the rod, I can't complain at all. I can't imagine spending tons of money on these things. 1 Quote

Be vigilant, for the Bait Monkey prowls the forums seeking the unaware, or the weak, even the strong. It will find weaknesses. Quote
Birdman2136 Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Hilarious. Trust me I am fully aware this day will come! ? 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted September 11, 2017 Super User Posted September 11, 2017 I own 3 Lightning Rods. And while I really like them and they're durable, I don't consider them sensitive. I use them for treble lures and moving baits like spinnerbaits/buzzbaits. I'd think you'll like the Daiwa offering more. Enjoy. Quote
primetime Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Lighting rods pound for pound are hard to beat....There was an article a website did that tested the 4 best Punching rods for under $50 and I believe they ended up being 1-Cabelas IM7 or IM8, Lighting Stick Shock, BPS Tournament IM6, Sellus. Cabela's makes a really nice rod with a lifetime warranty. I have become a huge fan of even their cheap Whoopin sticks which make nice rods for $20. Kind of like the BPS Graphite rods for $20..Just read the reviews...They are good rods especially to have as extra's, or to fish on a budget. $20 rods can catch more fish than expensive rods if used in the right water. If punching is a new technique for you, You may not like it, It can be extremely boring at times, so I think getting a versatile rod like a Shock is a good idea cause it can do the job for the most part. Scarborough817 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 i've had a bass pro graphite series for about 3 years now and it's held up to 1.5oz punching and pitching Quote
Birdman2136 Posted September 12, 2017 Author Posted September 12, 2017 I ordered a 7'0 Med Heavy Daiwa with a Abu Garcia Black Max. This will be my first bait cast set up. Then my 10 year old son and I decided to go check out Walmart. Ended up leaving with a 7'0 Lighting Shock Med Heavy and a cheap bait caster. I figure I can give it a try and my son loves throwing a frog so it was a win win for the both of us. ??? ps. That rod was 39 bucks at Wally World! Quote
