I am trying ro learn spinnerbaits.  From a kayak.  Don't stand on it.  I managed to catch two 4 lb LM with a dual blade spinnerbait.  However I am not sure I had the best set up.  I had 25 lb test braid with a mono leader on a M ugly stick rod with an okuma reel.  No problem getting them out of the pads.  However, I was wondering if I would do better with a medium or medium heavy BC rod with mono or fluro?  Not a lot of sensitivity on the current rod.  I also have heavier spinning rods but the handles are long for a kayak. I hope that some of you spinner bait fisherman can help a newbie (to spinner baits) out.

Not an expert by any means but I too just got into spinnerbaits.. and fish from kayak

Just this weekend bought:

7' Lowes Speed Stick MH Fast action

7:1 Lowe's speed spool

12 lb mono Berkely (wasn't 100% sure this was best but it seems to work pretty well. I think key is you want 12-18lb or so line)

One KVD willow leaf spinnerbait (3/4 oz), One Boombah(?) colorado blade spinner bait (3/8 oz)

Lost a big one on the colorado blade this evening.. I think I need to hookset better lol

Overall though this new outfit is a lot of fun and casts a mile. I'm pretty happy with it.

Others may correct some of these specs for optimal spinnerbait'in :)

Spinnerbaits are about the only thing I'm good at as far as fishing goes, LOL. I would suggest you find a rod that has a moderate tip but a strong backbone.  Something with some give but sensitive enough you can clearly feel the blades turning.  Look for more of a M or M/H with a moderate tip.  You want to be able to feel the lure whether you are running two willows or a single Colorado.  That's important because different spinnerbaits fish at different speeds.

As far as your reel you can run any ratio you want.  If you run a fast reel you will have to learn to slow way down when needed.  If you run a slow reel you will have to crank your wrist off sometimes.  I generally fish a slower reel on my spinnerbait set up just because it works great for buzzbaits too, but if I'm running willow blades then I'm cranking hard.

I don't have any heartburn running braid with spinnerbaits.  I like to run them parallel to weed lines and the braid is tough as nails in the rough plus I like the sensitivity.  But I also have another set up with 10lb mono and I do okay with that also but it doesn't feel as good in the weeds.  I generally run the slower stuff (Colorados, buzzbaits) on braid.  Just like the way it feels.  Personal preference.  And killer hooksets.  I can't help with the kayak thing as I fish standing up but my educated guess would be that braid would be more likely to give you the solid hooksets you are looking for rather than mono.  If you are going to use a mono leader just use mono.

Now teach me how to catch something with a jig!

for spinnerbaits, if you want to fish with braid, that's no issue, but i'd probably drop the leader and just fish straight braid.

i fish from a kayak myself.  my primary spinnerbait setup is a daiwa tatula 6'10" MHF rod, lew's pro z reel and 15# big game mono.  i will at times use 30# braid as well, especially if fishing in a particularly grassy area where i want to be able to rip the bait out of the grass.  braid also helps on those really long casts where you get bit as soon as it hits the water, the no stretch tendencies of the braid let you get a solid hookset even from a long distance.

the rod is the important part of this equation if you ask me.  i want something with plenty of backbone, but a soft enough tip to let me cast the spinnerbait with some precision.  good luck with it, it's one of my favorite ways to fish when they're on a spinnerbait bite!

I caught the largest bass of my life on my 6'10" Tatula MH/F rod with 40# braid, no leader for moving baits. The hook practically sets itself on that rod. Although if I was fishing only spinnerbaits on the rod, I would probably just run something like 15 or 17lb mono which has enough strength to drag it out of most grass just fine.

I also strongly prefer a casting rod for a moving baits as well as I can get more casts in and cast more accurately as well.
