OP said it would cost $51 extra to get a horn, does seem kinda expensive for just a horn. You may very well be right...or wrong. If a boat is being ordered, there is no beneficial reason for the manufacturer to add extras Quote
Tim Kelly Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 This reminds me of a thread about Express wanting to charge extra for the divider in a divided livewell. Whatever the rights and wrongs, it's just daft of the manufacturers to do something so petty and cause the issue and bad feeling in the first place. Quote

In my experience, here's how that kind of thing happens: Some bean counter somewhere...or a person with that kind of disposition...gets a wee bit too much influence over the way things are being run...and that's when stuff like that starts popping up. There's nothing wrong with getting paid for your work...and sales folks who get paid commission can be sneaky when it comes to "add ons" and "Oh-by-the-way"... But the smart thing is to figure out what the customer expects when they write the check...include those things in your costs, bury the costs in the initial price and make a fair amount...or what the market will bear. I can tell you that i'f I'm all excited about a boat...and I sit down at a desk and start writing a deal...and I get told a freakin' horn is extra...my checkbook is going back in my pocket and we're goin' shopin' with the competitor...and one of the first things I'm going to ask is, "Is the horn extra like on the Lund?" 1 Quote
Yakalong Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 if I'm a dealer I wouldn't let $51 break a sale for me, their margins are not that tight, let alone the cost of losing a costumer and future business. 2 Quote

For the OP, fortunately it was brought up during the ordering process and not discovered upon delivery of the boat. There are caveats as to why or why not something as simple as a horn should be included in a boat purchase. Blame the legal system. A horn may not be required on privately managed waters. It may not be required on a non motorized boat (Lunds can be ordered without motors) Same goes with a fire extinguisher...which is an option from Lund. Are these standard items on other brands? I have no clue. My Lund came with a horn. It was ordered by the dealer that way and I purchased it off the showroom floor. It did not come with the fire extinguisher. Nor did it come with a stern saver for the motor. So, which dealer to go with? The one who won't throw in the horn or the one who will? The dealer throwing in the horn isn't giving him a free horn. He is burying the cost somewhere else and/or hoping his gesture will be enough for the OP to return for service. There is a method to everyone's madness. Unfortunately for the "deal" process, boats don't come with window stickers. Boats don't sell enough for dealers to stock hundreds of units on their lot like a car dealership. In addition, the "boat builder" on any manufacturers site is BS. Maybe on purpose? Boats are a luxury item and not a necessity. People shop differently when purchasing something they want rather than something they need. Want breeds carelessness. If Lund can charge $50 some odd dollars for a horn and they get one complaint out of a thousand, they still come out ahead. Again, not defending Lund. If those reading have been around awhile, I came awfully close to filing a lawsuit against Lund/Brunswick and one of their dealers just a couple years ago over the way they handled their warranty process. At least one person lost their job and magically, the dealer who wronged me is no longer in business. Just sayin' and I would purchase another one in a heartbeat! 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted September 14, 2017 Super User Posted September 14, 2017 I'm not shopping for a Lund right now, and in fact I'm not even shopping for a boat. But if I were, and I read this thread, the fact that they won't put a friggin' horn in upon request would deter me from buying a boat from them a little bit. That, in a small sense, is not good business on Lund's part. 1 Quote
jbmaine Posted September 14, 2017 Author Posted September 14, 2017 hi all, Thanks for all the replies, Just to clarify a couple of things, I had to go through a couple of layers of management at lund to get this resolved, but when I did they were quite reasonable. What they told me is from the Impact on up a horn is standard equipment, but they sell almost 1/2 of their fury's and rebel's in Canada and for some reason Canadians don't want horns on their boats. (true or not, I have no idea). We are in final conversations with our dealer, and he is going over and above to work with us. I have nothing but good to say about him. I'll post more on this later. As for me, Ya I'm stubborn. I wanted a horn for safety reasons ( I'll also carry a whistle ) but Lunds website said it was standard , and I thought they should honor that, and they did. So at the end of the day, no harm no foul. We'll have final news on our boat in short order , and I'll post more on this soon Thanks Jim Quote

It's unfortunate that you had to take what seems like the long way around to get to the type of customer service you were hoping for. In the end, looks like this whole deal revolved around one incorrect sentence regarding standard features. Interesting where it took this thread. If this is the worst part of this next Lund experience for you, I think you'll be good. Best of luck moving forward. A-Jay Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted September 14, 2017 Super User Posted September 14, 2017 When you buy a boat you get 2 lists......Standard Equipment and Options. If you don't get it, ask for it. No more questions. Now if the lists are wrong...that's a whole another can-o-worms. Glad they did you right. Quote
