Fishin Dad Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 I am really enjoying getting into this jig fishing thing. The problem I am having is that the areas I fish, I need to flip one cast and skip the next. When I skip my jig, there are times when my trailer will slide down. I have seen that Strike king has a skipping jig with a screwlock built in. Wondering if that is the answer? Admittedly, some of my jigs don't even have a bait keeper on them. I accept it happening on those a little more. I have been looking at Seiberts site and can't see where it says what king of keeper they have. So I am asking you experts what jig works best for a flipping/skipping combo? Quote
IndianaOutdoors Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Any jig you prefer and super glue. I also have some jewel brand jigs with J-lock wire bait keepers. Sorry I don't have any experience with Seiberts yet. I wonder about the jigs with screw locks. Looks like it may be challenging to twist the plastic on there without catching the hook point. Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 9, 2017 Author Posted September 9, 2017 Thanks Indiana. I have tried super glue and it has worked for a bit, but I am going to keep experimenting with it. Just looking for something I can put a trailer on and throw right away. Not sure what is out there. Kind of new to throwing jigs this much. Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 9, 2017 Super User Posted September 9, 2017 I use Terry Oldham's Trailer Hitch Jigs because they have a Screw-Lock. Easy to put a trailer on em & they hold solid! 1 Quote
IndianaOutdoors Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 (edited) This is the Jewel j lock jig. The wire on the bottom of the jig has a small j hook on it. You just poke it through your plastic and hook it over the hook shank. Spring tension holds it in place. I have not had one come undone and because it holds a lot more of the meat of the plastic it doesn't rip the nose out of the plastic. Edited September 9, 2017 by IndianaOutdoors Quote
MichaelCopeland Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 I don't really have that problem on my jigs. I use Arkie jigs and they seem to hold a trailer pretty good, so far anyways. The only thing I have problems with the trailers on are my Z-Man chatter baits. For some reason, and I don't know why, I've bought them a couple weeks ago and each one had a bait keeper near the head. Lost those and replaced them one at a time. First one has the bait keeper but the one I just bought doesn't. It did come with an Elaztech trailer to use with it and it's kinda hard to put on and take off. Only thing about it is it's not really that effective, yet anyways, and other trailers keep sliding down after a few casts. I need to see what all kind of Elaztech trailers are available because they would definitely be the answer to that problem if they have some like I want and the bass seem to like. Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 Thanks fellas. I will check out the trailer lock and Jewel jigs. Mr. Copeland, I wish we could fish together sometime. We have the exact opposite problem. We could help eacother out. I don't skip my chatterbait too often so I think that's why my trailers stay on them better. I do use Indianas glue trick on them also though. Tight lines 1 Quote

Tight lines That would be awesome to do some fishing together. I'm sure we could help each other out on some things. I skip jigs sometimes. Still gotta work on that some more. I have found that Arkie head jigs skip really well. As far as the trailer staying on they seem to work ok for that too. Just haven't had near the success with jigs that I have with chatter baits or bladed jigs as they are called also. Really wanting to try a Siebert Outdoors bladed jig. Just with my limited funds, I'm hoping there's not a minimum order that would cost more than I can afford at one time. Heard lots of good things about their jigs and bladed jigs. Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 I agree with the bladed jigs being my confidence bait as well. I am really experimenting and forcing myself to fish all kinds of jigs to get. Enter at catching with them and to see what I like. Man is there a lot out there to choose from though. I will try a few more Arkie heads for skipping. Thanks. If you get a chance to try the a Seibert bladed jigs, let me know how they go for you. Good luck!!! Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 10, 2017 Super User Posted September 10, 2017 I don't have any problem holding pork rind trailers on my jigs! Screwing soft plastics onto a spring holder works but also tears it up, pushing the trailer onto this type of spring works better IMO. Most jig collars have 1 or 2 barbs to hold soft platics in place, the only thing you can do is use super glue gel. You can modify the jig by adding a pin type soft plastic holder by super glueing it to the hook shank then coarse warping 20 lb mono over the pin to create a ridged surface. Tom Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 Tom, I have tried pork many years ago and remember them being VERY sturdy. In your experience, do they have as good of action as plastics to entice the bite. Pork has me curious now, because if I remember, I had to cut the pork off my hook with a very sharp knife. That should skip all day with no problems. Thanks! By the way, every time I look at one of your posts, I sit back and wonder what a fish like that would look like coming up to the boat. Cannot imagine!! Quote

What kind of rod are you using to skip with? Baitcaster or spinning gear? I only use my spinning gear at the moment for skipping. Haven't tried it yet with my baitcaster, still getting used to it. I am getting a little better at pitching with it though. Getting decent distance but gotta get better with my accuracy still. It's easier with my spinning gear for now with distance and accuracy. Fishin Dad Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 I purchased two Daiwa reels with SV spools this year to help my skipping with a baitcaster. Not sure if it is the reel or the placebo confidence effect, but I am skipping weightless senkos on a 6'9" medium caster rod with a zillion SV and light jigs with a Tatula SV on a Tatula 6'10" mh. I am now trying to skip with other baitcasters and having some success. I still have a senko tied on a spinning rod at all times. Still easier when needed. Really prefer setting the hook and fighting fish on the baitcaster though. 1 Quote

I have a 6'10" MH/F Lew's American Hero Speed Stick combo with a 7.1:1 Lew's American Hero Laser reel. I love it and want to learn how to use everything I use on my spinning gear with it. Spinning gear is a M/F 6'6" Lew's Carbon Speed Stick combo with a 6.2:1 Lew's SG300 Speed Spool. I love it too. I alternate them each time I go out fishing. 1 Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 Those are nice combos. Should work fine. I also run some Lews reels. I like them. I was the same way. I would start out getting the feel with the spinning reel, then try casting reel..........and pick out a backlash or two 1 Quote
MNGeorge Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 We use these on all of our jigs...http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Hitch_SeriesTrailer_Keepers_The_Trailer_Hitch/descpage-HSTKPTH.html They fit most jig heads and do a remarkably good job of retaining the trailer. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted September 10, 2017 Super User Posted September 10, 2017 All "super glues" are not created equal. Have tried Gorilla super glue, crazy glue, etc. The best glue that I have found is the Loctite super glue. It sets up quickly, and it lasts. Don't like Crazy Glue. Too expensive. Too small a container. There is a trick to keep the super glue flowing. After applying it, hold the bottle upright, and burp it to prevent a membrane from forming across the nozzle. Burp it two or three times and keep it stored in the upright position. One bottle of the Loctite super glue should last you a season. 1 Quote

Adjusting the spool tensioner knob and the MCS braking system to each bait/lure I tie on. Distance isn't really the greatest, I can cast a good 25-30' or so with no problems. As I get used to it and thumbing the spool I'll eventually get more confidence and back the MCS and spool tensioner knob off a little at a time for increased distance. I wanna get better with my accuracy first though. It's still fun learning to use it and a bit of a challenge but I like a good challenge hence me learning to bass fish...lol. ? Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 Thanks guys. That trailer hitch keeper is in my cart at Tackle Warehouse. I will also pick up some Loctite. I have noticed some glues stink for fishing applications. I have some fishing glue with a brush applicator, but not overly impressed. Looks like I have some money to spend on jigs, keepers, and glues. I appreciate all and any advice!! Quote

Cannot imagine!! The problem with a pork rind bass jig trailer is it's not availble anymore. If you use a pork frog trailer and nose hook it, add a 3/4" long piece of soft plastic worm on the hook shank to prevent the trailer from sliding down the shank. There is a trick to remove a pork trailer so the hook barb doesn't snag the pork taking it off by rotating it. Try Catts jig suggestion, sounds like a winner. Tom 1 Quote
