ReelNonsense Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Looking for a durable rod for bass under 100$ Quote
CroakHunter Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 There is a giant thread about the "best" rod in the general bass fishing forum. Check there 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 7, 2017 Super User Posted September 7, 2017 OP: The best $100 rod is a $200 rod on closeout. What are you looking to do with the rod? A little bit of everything? For all around rods, I like 7'-7'3" MHF. This is for casting rods. I like shorter for spinning rods...around 6'-6'6". Pick your poison. At full price the Fenwick HMG is hard to beat of the rods I own. I've read good things about the Cabela's Tournament ZX and about the BPS Carbonlite rods, but have zero experience with them. No experience with the Dobyns Fury, but it is a $110 rod that fishnkamp says fishes like a $200 rod. It is one that I will buy when I find a bargain. The Berkley Lightning Shock has been around a long time (and the regular Lightning even longer) and are excellent rods for the money. I have a Lightning spinning rod that is around 45 years old. Don't use it much anymore for the simple reason I stick with baitcast rods whenever possible. It is the only rod I kept from that time period....as I did the Penn 430SS that is on it. Also look at Abu, Daiwa and Shimano rods in that price range. A rod I've never fished, but handled in store is the Escalade sold by Dick's Sporting Goods. Very light. Feels nice. It is a $100 rod that was on sale for $50 the last time I checked. 2 Quote
kylek Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 I am a big fan of the Abu Garcia Veritas rods. They are normally $99.00 but some places have sales on them to around $80.00. Also if you have an Academy Sports in your area, their Ethos brand rods are pretty decent. Quote

The Gen 3 Veritas are on the verge of release I believe this month. You can get the 2.0 for as low as $65 new I seen at Walmart website. Edit: Sportsmen's Warehouse has them for $59 as of right this second. 2 Quote

I have three Veritas casting rods and one spinning stick. Not to mention the Veracities, Villain, and Fantasista Regista. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted September 8, 2017 Super User Posted September 8, 2017 The Abu Garcia Veritas or the Berkley Shock comes to mind. If you are willing to spend another $15, you can often land a Daiwa Tatula on amazon at that price, and I also hear very good things about the Dobyns Fury as well. 1 Quote
jonkevin Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Cabelas has the Fenwick Silverhawk II on sale for $59.99. I just picked up a MF casting rod and it is a great rod for $60. 1 Quote
primetime Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 BPS Extreme when on sale or not. Any of the cabela's rods have lifetime warranty, they have a Bass Tourney rod that is $49 and feels nicer than many of my more expensive rods. The Fenwick HMG for $99 also has a lifetime warranty and a local shop in my area that sells them will replace them on the spot, The grips on the rod can handle a beating and it is just a great rod. The Medium Action is my favorite of them all, think it is 1/4-5/8 so handles most applications plus it is up to 16lbs I believe. I used to buy mostly MH for casting rods, but once I picked up a quality Medium action, I now find I use that most since you can cast a weightless worm, most common sized lures much further. Some companies MH is really a Medium, but for one rod if not fishing heavy lures, A medium action 7' is a fantastic all around rod. You can also pick up the Daiwa Aird one piece rods for $40 and i have not picked one up yet, but it looks & feels like a $100 Rod, think it is the Air series. Shimano has a new rod out for under $100 that is just as nice as the Compre in my opinion. TW has the Daiwa casting rods, S series for $70, but look for sales, I always look for a model from last year that is half price. Or I will buy a combo when on sale, You can pick up a Carbonlite rod with a Pro Qualifer for $100 certain times of year, or get lucky and find a Revo on a BPS Extreme for $129, Sell the Revo on Ebay for $90 and now you have a $30 Rod. Dicks has the Lews Combo's on sale for $119, That rod is nice, especially for $15. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted September 10, 2017 Super User Posted September 10, 2017 IMHO for sub $100 rods, almost anything under the Pure Fishing umbrella is tuff to beat. I own/use or have owned/used many, from several of their lines. This Includes: Fenwick HMX's - $80 Fenwick HMG's -$100 Berkley Lightning Rod Shock's -$50 Abu Garcia Vendetta's - $80 Abu Garcia Veritas - $100 Abu Garcia Vengeance's - $50 If I had to pick favorites from all of those right now..............6 months ago it would have been the Lightning Rod Shock, but as of today, It's the Abu Vengeance. A few of my Shocks were getting up there in age, and over the course of this season were replaced on a whim with Abu Vengeance's for the simple reason of I like my other Abu rods, and Walmart carries them, so local procurement was attainable and easy. As of right now, they are my new "best bang for the buck" recommendation. I like them better than the previous Gen Vengeance by a mile. And I much prefer their reel seats/nut to the metal nuts on the Gen 1, 2, and 3 Vendetta's and Gen 1 and 2.0 Veritas. I am excited for the new Veritas casting rods though, I like what they have done (at least on paper/in pictures) with the reel seats.....**DISCLAIMER** ...I HATE the reel seat on the Veritas 2.0 spinning rods, but that's just a personal pref. I also just got some new Daiwa Aird X and Fuego rods too, but am waiting for more disposable fishing funds (I don't go into debt for a hobby) to put reels on them. 1 Quote
