Blacktail 8541 Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 I am looking for reel recommendations for my GLOOMIS MBR 842 glx. it is the 2016 version. This rod will also see some duty as a drop shot combo. Do not have a set budget, so recommend what you think would be best regardless of price. It can be $100 or $500 as long as it would be good for this application. Gear ratio or line per inch recommendations would be great also. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 3, 2017 Super User Posted September 3, 2017 Three good choices 1 daiwa alphas. 2. Shimano core 3. And if money is no issue a zpride. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted September 3, 2017 Super User Posted September 3, 2017 For your MBR rod I think the best suit would be shimano Aldebaran 50. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted September 3, 2017 Super User Posted September 3, 2017 If you don't want to spend quite so much, there is a Daiwa Tatula CT that will fit any need. I love my HSTA's, Fuego's and TD-Z's but my Tatula's are better casters in most situations! The more I use mine the more impressed I become. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted September 3, 2017 Super User Posted September 3, 2017 I would go with a faster ratio reel like 7:1 in the shimano line. Quote
Dtrombly Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 I would look at any SV spool Daiwa, 7.1:1 minimum Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted September 3, 2017 Super User Posted September 3, 2017 Since that is sort of a mag finesse combo you are building I would look at the Daiwa Alphas SV 105. Reel is on sale at TW as well. It is simply amazing for what you want to throw and with the sale is a great deal. If you can snag the 7:2.1 ratio I would probably go that direction. Quote
Blacktail 8541 Posted September 4, 2017 Author Posted September 4, 2017 Thanks for the replies, At this point I am leaning to the Aldabaran or scorpion. I have several of the Daiwa sv reels and am thinking of mixing it up a little. I like Shimano as I stated out with the curado series. I have the new K as well as older reels. Quote
Blacktail 8541 Posted September 9, 2017 Author Posted September 9, 2017 I picked up the steez today. My dealer gave me a deal I could not refuse. $250.00. He had it on the shelf to long and wanted to move it. i'm going to order new 7.X gears for it and a longer carbon handle with Megabass knobs.May even add a little bling to it! Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 9, 2017 Super User Posted September 9, 2017 Never had issues with 6.3 gears for jerkbaits. Have you tried it yet??? Quote
Blacktail 8541 Posted September 9, 2017 Author Posted September 9, 2017 No, haven't tried it yet. Just going by what has been suggested. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 10, 2017 Super User Posted September 10, 2017 I would see how it meets your needs before you spend any more money. The bulk of my reels are 6.3 and there are very few times it does not work perfectly. The exception would be frogging i like the 7.1 or 7.3 better for that. I own a 7.9 and i cannot seem to find a good use for it, so it stays on a flipping setup. Quote
Blacktail 8541 Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 I will have to try it, I just found out their are no options for the 6.3 to be upgraded to a higher 7.x due to the size of the gear box. Until recently I had no reels faster than a 6.3, so I guess it will be fine. 1 Quote
