Hey all,

I really like the look and functionality of a punching rig but honestly think it just takes too many steps and pieces to put together.  I am looking to purchase a pre-made punching rig with this kind of setup, from the top to bottom of the lure:

~3/4oz Weighted Head w/ line eye connected to a

Jig skirt connected to a

Swivel or ring connected to an

EWG worm hook

If they sold these pre-made it would just be one knot, texas-rig up your soft plastic, and start punching.  I know this setup somewhat resembles a jig but in this setup the hook is an EWG worm hook so there is no exposed hook.  Also, because of the swivel, the hook is free to wiggle around instead of being firmly attached to the weight head.

You may think I'm being lazy but I usually kayak fish with 2 rods and have to tie-on lures often due to limited rod space.  Tying on a jig takes no time compared to a punch rig for me, but I like the weedless-ness and wiggly-ness of a punch rig more.

Does this type of a lure exist?

Thanks!

I buy these in bulk and tie my skirts on but I still put a bobber stop in front of and behind this (to protect the knot). Probably not what you are looking for.

Why not just buy a punching jig?

From the looks of those they just have an ordinary hook designed to hook a soft plastic straight through the body and leave the sharp part exposed.  I really want a worm hook because I essentially just want to fish a weedless texas rig but add a skirt in the combo.

Gotcha.  Somewhere @A-Jay has a pic of the jigs he assembles that sound EXACTLY like what you want.  In the meantime, here's what I've been using for three years for punching super heavy cover.  It doesn't feature a skirt, but the 1 oz. pencil weight pulls the bait through as good as a 1.5 oz. punch rig.

Here's what I use - and Yes I do think you're lazy ~

Rigging up gear is part of the fun - stop looking for short cuts . . .

Here's the rig, from the main line to the hook:

-A weight stop or stopped knot (I use a double uni-knot made from left over braided line)

- A small bead to keep the knot from slipping through the weight.

- A 1/2 oz tungsten weight

- a Boss Punch Hub - this is placed inside the skirt collar

- The skirt of your choice

- A parasite clip (optional, but does help prevent the plastic from sliding down the hook)

- A 5/0 Owner wide gap plus EWG hook (#5139 - very stout, I love this hook)

- Your favorite soft plastic - pictured is a Power Bait Beast

The Boss Hub is available at Tackle warehouse

Thanks JFrancho.

We also offer the tungsten flipping weight and a punch skirt to build one like AJ posted.  If your not looking for the weight with attached skirt like Jfrancho posted.  We have both types.  We carry all the componets to build either style.  Hooks, Weights, Peg, Punch weights, Punch hubs.

If you need a swivel just prerig them at  home .  I think just a  snap will accomplish the same thing . Just one knot .

You are just going to have to rig them up. Tou can go the a-jay or the catt route, i prefer Catt's method with the strait shank flipping hook and the weight with the keeper on it but thats elementary. In my humble opinion if you're going to punch grass punch grass all day if you're going to switch your baits don't even try to punch it's not a numbers game if you get five bites flipping grass you had a good day for flipping grass. here's two examples the bottom one is my swim jig punch rig version with a 4ot ewg twist lock hook and the top one is a traditional punch rig with a three quarter ounce tungsten weight with a 4ot tk130. I order my skirts off tacklewarehouse.com from boss jigs.

The closest thing I can think of is the Freedom Stealth jig. You can get sizes up to 1 oz.

Check out the Stanley Website. The wedge head has an EWG, I think it is priced well also. Barlows sells a bullet weight you can attach a ring, skirt, hook called infinity weight in bullet shape & light, cheap compared to the Mustad Fast Tac version.

I prefer simply sliding on a weight, then either adding a skirt or not, some days skirts will help, some days you will notice they don't want it, hard to understand why. BPS has the lead punch weights with the hub for $2 for 3. I would go Tungsten if using more than 1/2 oz, but those Jig rigs look sweet with heavy weights. I need to make some. Losing tungsten punch weights really hurts, buying weights is not a fun lure to buy.

Not sure why, but I can't see a lot of the pictures on this thread. What you might want to try is putting the punch weight and boss punch hub, if the weight doesn't allow for a skirt, on a piece of wire that you bend and wrap at the end. Then attach the hook with a split ring and either use a snap, preferred in case the wire has a rough spot from the bending tool, or tie direct to the other end. Similar to a Carolina prerig. Only concern might be if the loop on the front might hinder punching through.

Added a pic of a version I will be using on the river with a lighter weight, same idea though and would just need to peg the weight on the wire for punching.

Thanks, guys, all of you have some really great tips.  Pre-rigging up some punch rigs would be a good option; it takes time but I could do it at home when I'm not wasting valuable time on the water.

I did some further searching and found these Wobble Head Jigs from Frugal Lures.  In all honesty I didn't even know that a "wobble head jig" existed but it is very very close to what I am looking for.  My only complaint is that the max weight is 3/4oz and the head design isn't as aerodynamic as a normal punching rig.  I bought a couple just to try them out but I believe pre-rigging up something like Kicker's suggestion will be my best option.

FWIW, the Stanley Wedge head jig and Freedom Stealth mentioned above both have "wobble heads" but are more stream lined.

Somehow looked over this until just now.  Thank you!  This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for.

Looked over that post somehow; thank you for pointing that out!

Carl, setting-up a punch-rig is actually quite easy and does only have 1 knot. There are lots of videos on Youtube and the like that show you how to do it, but Gary Klein has videos on his Boss Outdoors website that show exactly how to set it up, and he sells the products to do so, except for the tungsten sinkers, which you always want to use over lead. Like one of the other posts said, a punch-rig is really a bait to emulate a jig but that will not get hung-up in heavy cover, so you may not need it... Try using a heavy jig, like a 3/4oz to 1 1/4oz, if that gets hung up, then you would need to go to a punch-rig. If I can present a jig in heavy cover without hanging-up, I will do so 100% of the time because I'm going to hook and land close to 100% of the bites I do get, whereas, a heavy punch-rig will at best put 75% of your bites in the boat. So, only fish a punch-rig if necessary, and if you're not sure, do some more research about it to gain a better understanding of it and you'll have your answer.
