steve08 Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I really wanted to understand the reel, rod, line combo when I started. it takes me a long time to find the best gear. I still have to learn what, when, where. The right technique in the right condition. can't wait your answer guys, have a nice fishing day. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 1, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 1, 2017 Always something new to learn. Even techniques that I've done my entire life I can still get better at them. If you don't learn something new every day on the water, you're doing it wrong. 9 Quote
crypt Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I try to learn something every trip......even on home waters that I've fished for 35 years. 5 Quote

perd Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I don't like crankbait fishing and don't catch a lot of fish doing it, I spent a lot of time chucking jerkbaits this spring and didn't catch a lot of fish. Quote
steve08 Posted September 1, 2017 Author Posted September 1, 2017 You are right guys always something to learn. Where did you find your info. do you prefer books or video. or blog? I started with watching a lot of video, but I discover some good old books like KVD books and it's like a bible for me. I keep it just beside my bed or in the truck. I can find topics quickly and there is a lot of info that you do not find anywhere else... 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted September 1, 2017 Super User Posted September 1, 2017 Theres an area at the lake I fish the most that I havent figured out in forty years . I know theres a spot or two there that is a bass magnet . Lots of depth changes as the old creek channel zags in and out . If I could run a big boat in there and use the depth finder I would probably find it . Stuck in a jonboat with an elec motor only , I just havent been able to connect the dots , yet . 5 Quote

Books, magazines, online articles, forums like this one and my own personal experiences on the water. I read everything I could on skipping docks but none of it helped as much as getting on the water and doing it. Casting practice in the yard has helped my accuracy and improved my ability to put lures where I want. I would do this daily the first 3 or 4 years after I got back into fishing and think that helped me more than anything else Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted September 1, 2017 Super User Posted September 1, 2017 I always try to devote a lot of time to a new technique. Its the best way for me to learn the options for any presentation. I have been known to empty my boat of any lure other than what I am trying to learn and go fishing for a day. 3 Quote
steve08 Posted September 1, 2017 Author Posted September 1, 2017 Well its look like the strategies are a tough thing to understand and manage! Quote
Super User Spankey Posted September 1, 2017 Super User Posted September 1, 2017 I've been doing this a very long time and always continue to learn. I really wish I was very proficient at jig and pig fishing. I can jig fish a grub, split tail, salty spider type or Guido Bug but I just struggle with a jig and pig or jig and craw. I have developed a mental block. Hard to shake. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 2, 2017 Super User Posted September 2, 2017 Other can be a massive category. Let's start with basic bass behavior, how many of you know why bass are where you are catching them? Do you know how to find the right location and select the proper lure for that time and conditions? Do you know how to interpret your sonar? The tool between your ears is always learning, use it! Jaderose Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Well....this is stupid, I guess, but I learnt me something just today. I've always seen everybody talk about Green Pumpkin Senko's. I've always thought this was silly for where I fish most of the time because they're almost exactly the same color as the water. How can a fish see that? So I've always used white dipped in JJ's or Bubblegum or Morning Dawn or something like that. Always did pretty well with all that stuff. Until today. NOTHING was working. I found one...literally ONE.....green pumpkin Senko in my plastics bag that musta spilled out before I took that pack outta my bag. I thought WTH and tied it on. Dipped just a little tiny bit of the taper in JJ's and HOLY CRAP. Started out with one 6" Senk and finished with a 2" Senko that was just ripped to shreds. Ok.....I get it now. That GP bag will be going back into the lineup fast! 2 Quote
gnappi Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 This year I started fishing FW again after 25 or so years living in a home on salt water. One thing has not changed for me, spinning gear, though I'm using much lighter gear than ever it's just more fun. What has changed a lot is the diminutive 1000 class rear drag Shimano rigs which I'm using with hybrid line and my lure selection now varies regularly. When I lived "up north" what worked regularly didn't do diddly for me in Florida, that was the biggest hurdle I had to go through, the regional "preferences" of the fish. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted September 2, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 2, 2017 Gonna get philosophical... As much as I think I know about how to catch a bass, the more I realize that there is so much more I don't know We're constantly trying to find an edge in our equipment and baits, to satisfy a desire to match wits with a living being with a brain, who has an inherent aversion to being captured. "What remains to know about bass fishing"? No matter how much we learn or how much we think we know, we will never have all the answers.. Honestly, I hope I never do. Mike 1 Quote
XpressJeff Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 With this being my first full season as a boat owner I have realized that my list of things I would like to master resembles an Encyclopedia Britannica! Oh, I guess they don't have them anymore do they. See what I mean! Quote

38 Super Fan Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 I've got a lot to learn when it comes to fishing deep and the use of electronics. I've got plenty of other weaknesses too, but that would be the most glaring. Quote

In Kvd secret's of a champion book he explain how to choose the good color and he say that the very atractive color are not always the right choice. You had the perfect example of that situation...
