P32 Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I have decided to go with 15lb PowerPro braid as my main line with 12lb Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon leader on my 6'6" medium fast Shimano Convergence + Shimano Symetre 2500FL. I was wondering if it would be ok since 15lb PowerPro braid has 0.008" diameter while Seaguar Premier leader has 0.009". Will that 0.001" diameter difference affect the knot and cause issues? Also how long of a leader should I tie on? Quote
bigturtle Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 no, unless you are tying 60lb braid to 8lb mono, or something similar, dont worry about line diameter. leader length depends on a lot of things, too many to explain properly. since you are new at it, tie about a 6ft leader. Quote
Ktho Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 All my baitcasters have braided line. I typically tie on 5-6', the leader is basically from the tip of the rod to the reel so it varies depending on rod length. I always want the braid to be a smaller diameter than my leader line and I want it to be at least 2 line classes stronger than the leader. I want it to be smaller because trying albright knot variants work best with dissimilar line sizes and makes for small connections. I want it to be stronger because there is no stretch in the braid, 12lb mono/fluoro can be stronger than 20lb braid because the shock absorbance and stretch and I don't want the braid to be weaker than the leader otherwise might as well be using a lighter leader since these aren't toothy fish. I prefer 40lb braid for the 10-20lb leaders I tie on, I just like the diameter of it and the thin stuff just doesn't cast as nicely imo and has a higher tendency to dig into itself. Braided line is the truth, amazing hook sets, amazing sensitivity, extremely castable, you're on the right path. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted September 2, 2017 Super User Posted September 2, 2017 It's fine, regardless of whether it is a spin g set up or casting. You will find that there are a lot of guys here using 30+ braid here, but experiment for yourself. The break strength of most braid is significantly higher than the rated strength and properly set drags go a long way in saving your line. Many here will also use straight braid, I do for top waters and some swimmers and have never broke braid that rub on something rough, as the abrasion resistance is low. Have fun and find out for yourself what works. Most of my braids are 10 and 20 pound Quote
