AC870 Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Snuck out for a couple hours tonight after work. A lot of bait activity on the edge of the grass. I threw a spinnerbait, a Whopper Plopper, a frog, a swimming worm, nothing. Moved to another grass bed. Even more activity. Started throwing a shad colored unweighted Senko-like plastic. Y'all know I'm still learning how to fish unweighted plastics. I got bit 6 times before I finally stuck one. Had figured it out and the dang wind came up and wrecked what I had going. Ran to a sheltered sea wall and caught one more. These were 12-inch dinks. Couple of the ones I turned but didn't stick felt bigger. I liked this technique. Do you ever catch big fish on it? What I learned is you've got to really set the hook. Gonna change the mono that's on there to copolymer and see if that helps a little with the hook set. It was a very pleasant evening weather wise. Can't wait to throw this some more.
Dens228 Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 I caught a 8 pounder on a wacky rigged Senko. I also had a once in a lifetime day where I caught, on 4 consecutive casts, 21", 19", 18", 19", all on weightless texas rigged Senkos. So yes you can catch big ones.
Super User islandbass Posted August 30, 2017 Super User Posted August 30, 2017 Right on! Senkos are a fish catching bait. 3" senkos are my smallie killers on the drop shot. With regard to mono, unless you don't have the appropriate rod, I would not readily blame the use of mono. For example, if you set the hook and there was too much slack in the line, it probably wasn't the mono. If you were trying to set the hook from a country mile away, it probably wasn't the mono either. The culprit might even be the type or size of hook. Or when you set the hook the bass might not have even had the hook in its mouth yet. Then, if you switch to braid and have never used it, you'll be messing up on the hookset because you'll likely be yanking the entire bait from them (pure excitement reaction) prematurely, lol. I'm guilty as charged at one time or another myself. A little tongue and cheek and go figure ?humor. Sometimes we miss the hookset because we miss the hookset. It's part of the deal when fishing. What color were you using?
Super User tcbass Posted August 30, 2017 Super User Posted August 30, 2017 Senko's have caught some of our largest bass. If the weather kicks out and you need to get it down quicker I put a small nail into the head of the Senko when it's wacky rigged.
Super User TOXIC Posted August 30, 2017 Super User Posted August 30, 2017 You didn't say what hook you were using but I fish Senko's on mono a lot, it's my preferred line. With a 5 inch Senko Texas rigged, my hook of choice is a Gamakatsu 4.0 ewg thin wire. The Superline hooks are too thick and contribute to missed hooksets and also will tear the Senko quicker. I have caught 8lb largemouth and 5lb smallmouth on this setup regularly and have never had a hook straightened or broke.
