thebillsman Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 Okay so I went and purchased a few rods and reels that make a few redundancies in my rod/reel selections. I'm not looking for an answer per sé but would like some advice as to what duties I can assign to reassure myself that my gear won't be collecting dust in the garage. Just as a preface, I like to fish on the light side. Here in PA we don't often see 6lb+ fish glued to the bottom of mats and vegetation, so I try to outfit my arsenal accordingly. 7' KLX M/MF, Lews MB with 10lb mono - Cranks and sub-100 jerkbaits 7' KLX MH/MF, Lews MB with 10 mono - Deep cranks, large jerks 7' KLX M/F, Tatula SV (8.1) with 10lb InvizX- Weightless, small jigs & shakey's ## 7'3" MH, Curado 70HG with 50lb FX2 - Frogs and Ploppers Now I don't know what to do with this rod.. ## 6'10" M/F, Tatula SV (7.3) unspooled I am thinking of going with 40lb braid and a flouro leader for ~1/2+ oz jigs and trailers, spinner/chatter baits and buzzbaits. Thoughts? Quote
RichF Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 I think that would be a little on the light side for those baits. With the braid, you could get away with tossing smaller spinner/buzz/chatterbaits but jigs that heavy would be iffy. Maybe lighter jigs with light wire hooks? Quote

I just don't know what to do with that 6'10" Medium now, I got a crazy deal on a KLX & two Tatula's, and now I'm all over the place. Quote
RichF Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 I love those rods. Kistler just got me again. Got 4 Mag2's bc they were 50% off... I only have 1 medium/fast rod...out of 30. I use it for jerkbaits and small cranks with 10lb fluoro. I just don't feel comfortable with medium action rods. They don't really fit my style of fishing. I used to use them for heavier tube jigs for Ontario smallmouth. That worked ok. I think they're good for weightless plastics but that's something I just don't use. Personally, the 1/2oz weight doesn't concern me, it's whether or not you'd be able to set the hook with a medium rod. If you were using finesse jigs, that's a different story. That rod would be fine for those. Quote

I've never missed a big one with a M/F and 10lb InvizX so one would think that 40lb SX1 and a FC leader would be even more capable, no? Ahhhh! Quote
RichF Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 I think the braid will help offset the softness of the rod. If your hooks are sharp, you'll be fine. Test it out and see for sure. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted August 29, 2017 Super User Posted August 29, 2017 I would think that would be a decent rod for smaller boot tails, weightless soft plastics, finesse jigs, 1/4 oz spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, topwaters, etc. , etc. 1 Quote

In clear water, low vegetation situations I could option for the flouro and lighter KLX, and oppositely I could use the more stout M/F ##. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 29, 2017 Super User Posted August 29, 2017 I'm a PA guy too, and there is a good use for that 6'10" M-F rod. Smaller spinnerbaits and swim jigs, 1/4oz to 3/8oz around boat docks and sparse grass. That is based off what you have but if it were me, I'd use that for topwater and jekrbaits rather than the 7' M-MF but I prefer a sub 7' rod for topwater and jerkbaits, to me if you are using a jerkbait with a sideways twitch then you aren't getting the best action or the best depth out of it. Now if you are 6'5" tall then a 7' rod for jerkbaits works well as you can get the downward rip without hitting the water or the side of the boat. 1 Quote
