Tackle Goal 2018 Buy none only 2 exceptions

After inventorying my baits, seeing how many baits I haven't tried yet, kid n college, and that I have enough stock to get me through a season or two (maybe not with one bait in particular, but a suitable replacement). I figure it is time to try this. I will be doing a TW Black Friday order and ask for tackle from family, but even that will be less than usual.

 

The two exceptions will be the up north tackle shop where we always buy a bait or three and get some info. The second would be if my wife gives me a budget at the St Croix factory where I got great deals on factory second Avid X and Mojo this year, would be stupid to be stubborn and turn this down. My wife will not be made aware of this plan. 

 

Think this his can be done? Wondering if I give myself any mulligans for outings that my wife would suggest, like a trip to Bass Pro (has been over 8 years since we last went). Would be kind of cool if I pulled it off. The upside is I may force myself to try some different baits and techniques.

The optimist in me, very small part, would hope the opposite that my money saving would be remembered once my kid is out of college and I would get a chance at a big order or shopping trip. Realistically your probably right.

Not a diehard Muskie guy, but have caught all my musky on bass gear including two mid 40s. Really think right now the big muskies are chasing smaller baits. Have had multiple 50s follow bass cranks in. Don't tell the musky guys though;) Some Muskie tackle can make Megabass baits look like a deal;)

You've inspired me. I'm going on a "diet" too.

i do want to acquire a Whopper Plopper 110 but I should have enough stuff to fish for a year. 

Might have to buy floats, jigheads and crickets for the wife's bluegill habit but no more.

It's a good plan in theory but just as the gym rats and their New Years resolutions crash within a few weeks it will be tough to make it past the spring classic sales. Best of luck.

Good luck, but my bet's on you buying some of those teckel sprinkler frogs you've been talking about as soon as they come back in stock...  I can't seem to go longer than three months without running out of one of my favorite baits, and I definitely couldn't go a year without buying anything.

I realized I was dropping about $100.00 on tackle a week for about three years. I was buying just for the sake of buying and further realized that the great majority of these baits while looking cool, were not being utilized. So I stopped buying random baits and have spent less than $100.00 this summer. I wish you the same luck, it is actually easier than most think.

I think I will do ok. If I don't have a gift card I generally don't order. Thankfully Black Friday and the 25 days sale happen before the cutoff. Though those are replenishment orders for me more than anything.

Nope to the teckel, I tried some homemade ones and liked them, but they don't fit 95% of my fishing so the three homemade ones I have will last me a while. There is one person on here that I hope finally got his, because he was real excited about them. As far as favorite baits go I could survive on my tube and Kalins grub boxes for years, both are super versatile baits and I have just a few of each in a few colors;)

On a much smaller scale this was me. I have all my TW orders printed out and I am checking off the baits I use as I use them that I thought I had to have four years ago. If Something was on clearence, I bought a bunch, well just because. I think in the future I will try to be smarter about my purchases and limit impulse buys that will likely never get used.

I'd hate to miss out on TW Black Friday sale. That might be more for a new baitcaster and frog Rod set up. Sort of doing a make shift spinning set up to do it right now. 

 

I recently got bit by the Chinook Salmon bug. Two days just killed them. 17-25lb. fish. Want to continue on with doing some of this. Want a few things to make that happen. Have a 30 lb'r in mind. My kids and their families love to eat them.

I have a simple plan to cull tackle,  for every bait I buy I get rid of 5 like baits. Honestly all I need for at least 3 years is line  and bullet weights.

Reading a lot of the replies I think there are some of us that have been fishing and collecting tackle long enough that we can pull it off. I have been fishing for enough years and had enough Christmases that I will do ok. For those that are newer to fishing, yeh I don't see this being an option. About the only thing I won't have are the hot new lures that come out next year, but I have learned from buying too many of those in the past that have flamed out. Better to let them become proven lures before I splurge lol.

I have faith I will return to my old self. Also, I have a two car garage with filing cabinets and overhead space filed with more terminal tackle and soft plastics then my local Dicks Sporting Good. Not kidding. So I will be ok for a while.

Ok, so I broke down today and made a purchase. I was driving by Cabellas and needed mushroom head jigs. Again, they didn't have a single pack. I see the Bargain Cave and peruse through. A Hydrowave Mini regulalry price at 135 marked down to 70. I know they go for around $100 so I decide to try it. Cant pony up $500.00 for the regular unit because I am skeptical. I cash out and the hydro wave mini rang up as $35.00. Excited to see if it produces.

Haha I like your plan, best of luck! I take a trip to park falls every year as well, dad and I just like to go. It's tough not getting something there. As far as tackle goes, I've got a bigger stash than I care to admit, some pretty cool stuff too, like original power worms in the package, thousands of senkos, it's pretty bad. It's about 3 Rubbermaid tubs worth. I'm actually thinking about taking quite a few soft baits and recycling them to a bait mold I more often use. I pretty much have a plastic worm, pitboss/craw, senko, and a jig tied on year round. I try to buy only things I absolutely need, but it's hard. Thought about putting some tackle together to give to some young angler wanting to get into the sport.
