Hey I'm 16, I have a canoe now but Ive been looking at fishing boats. For the lakes I want to go to you can't have anything over 10hp. Found one good one so far and am going to look at it tomorrow. If anyone has any recomendations for me on which boats to get or what to look for when I'm looking at a boat please let me know. My dad has owned ski boats before but I don't think he ever had a fishing boat.

Heres the one im looking at

Thank you very much

Good to hear that. I would like to have a full on bass boat but at 16 I'm not sure if it's a good decision, plus I'm not sure if it would be too good putting a 10 hp motor on one of them

How stable would that thing be?

Who knows???

All that wood adds a lot of weight. Boat was probably only rated for 600lbs or so.

So would you not recommend a boat like that?

depends on what you plan on using it for. a 14 foot v bottom is usually not as stable to walk around or stand in, compared to a flat bottom or modified v boat.

Yeah I'd want to walk around on it thanks for the reply

The thing I would do is go look at it and then if you are interested in it seriously ask to take it to the water.

Go get a ride in it..  That will tell you ho the thing rides, its stability and how well the motor runs.

If you like what you see go for it. I have seen others do similar mods and they seemed to work out.

This would not be a boat I would stand on a casting deck and flip or pitch but I have owned several boats I sat and fished from.

I had something similar with a 20HP Johnson on it. It was quite stable and allot of fun!

Mine still had the center section between the 2 stock seats open though.

+1 for what's said above without a doubt.

If it all works as advertised I might offer $1000.

What do you hAve to pull it with?

I'm looking for something I can stand in. If I had to sit in a boat I'd rather get a trolling motor for my canoe

Could you stand up on your deck? Was it a full v?

I have a chevy 1500

Yes sir, and I am not a little man!

Haha great. I'm only 140 lb myself but I will probably be pulling some big guys with me I don't want to take an unwanted swim haha

Buy a quality PFD and consider how you'll get back in if you should go swimming. That can still happen, especially with a first boat!

Looked at that boat today and one other one. The one I already linked was pretty good he came down to 1000 right away and I think I can get it for 900. I'm considering bigger ones now but I'm still very interested in that one.

The other one I looked at didn't give me a good first impression. It had a bunch of leaves in it and the guy was pretty arrogant. Just didn't get a good feeling about it, he wouldn't come down in price at all either. Here's that one- https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/boa/d/15-aluminum-fishing-boat/6266131882.html

Found a couple others on cl too. Here's the best one I found. https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/boa/d/1999-lowe-170w/6275194294.html

i would have to buy a trolling motor and regular motor for it though. Looks good and clean and it has no wood just aluminum in the deck so that's good. How much would a decent 10 hp motor and decent trolling motor for that be? And is a 10hp enough for that?

Found this too- https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/boa/d/99-tracker-boat-minn-kota/6278227978.html

he doesn't give much info on that but if it is as good as he says I think that's a good deal.

What does everyone think? Thanks a lot for all the help

Tracker bought Fisher boats around that time. Fisher boats were known leakers. Doesn't mean that's a Fisher hull, just something to consider when looking at the boat

Yeah I'm not sure about the tracker ad it seems weird. How about the Lowe? How much would it be for a decent 10hp?

Odd that he would part out a complete boat.

Anyway, as far as the motor, a new one is around 3 grand. The issue becomes you will need to match the motor brand with the forward controls, and then the cost of installation.

Dang that's a lot. I think we could put it together but don't know. I'll probably just end of getting the first one I linked. Did you look at the sea nymph I linked? He isn't going to drop much so I'll end up paying double what I would the first one I posted and it doesn't have electric start, the first one does (no big deal really but still nice). It's 2 feet longer and has a live well that's about all that's better. I don't think I would even really use the live well really

Will either of the 2 guys (first boat and sea nymph) meet you at the lake for a test run?

I think the challenge with that Lowe would be finding a remote 10hp.  I looked at Craigslist in your area and all I found was tiller motors.  Just out of curiosity, how do people operate on a 10hp restricted lake?   Is it idle speed only or are people running around full speed in little aluminum jons?  There aren't any hp restricted lakes around me.  Plenty of electric only, idle speed only and 10 mph limit though.

We didn't ask. How important is it to do that? Do you think the sea nymph is worth twice as much as the first one?

Yeah I couldn't even really find any good 10hp engines just a lot of vintage stuff. They go full out on their 10 hp boats

Sea Nymph is a good hull. If everything runs, $2k is not out of line for boat motor and trailer. Probably much more stable than the 14 footer as well. The front deck looks like an add on. The motor looks like it's from the 70's, and the boat may be that old as well.
