Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 I recently purchased some Berkley Havoc baits on sale at $2 a pack if you buy 5 or more. Smash Tubes, Beat Shad, Flat Dawgs and Pit Boss. Other than the Smash Tubes, which are covered in salt, none of these baits seem to be salt impregnated or scented in anyway. Whats a good way besides spray scents to get them smelly? In the past I have put unscented baits into a Ziploc baggie and thrown some torn up Ocho pieces in with them to get that coffee smell. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 JJ's Magic Spike It Megastrike or any other of the dozens of fish attractant's Fill a sandwich bag with minced garlic and your baits 3 Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 Whatever rows your boat, I've fished for decades and caught thousands of fish with unscented baits so it's going to be difficult to prove to me it makes a real difference. 8 Quote

BigAngus752 Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 Never in my life had I used any kind of "fish attractant" on my lures until this year (not including catfishing). I didn't want to mess with the sprays or gels getting all over everything. I just kept thinking about how bad all of my catfish gear used to stink all the time. Then I was in a store and saw BioEdge makes a "wand". It's like a small stick of deodorant. Goes on with no mess at all and never leaks. My bites have tripled (That means I get three bites in a day of fishing instead of one LOL). I'm sold. We have one at the front and one at the back of the boat. So far we've tried "shad" and "crayfish". Perhaps better fisherman don't need it. I'm not one of the better fisherman so I cheat whenever I can. 3 Quote
BuzzHudson19c Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 I think the whole "scented" thing is another form of companies catching fisherman, not fish. The bass don't care. Quote
Porkrind Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 JJ's Magic is what I use. Can't say it's increased my bites but I love the products. I even use the clear when dyeing isn't necessary. 2 Quote

Berkley makes several attractant scents like Powerbait and Gulp that you can add to your soft plastics. What do you have agianst spray scents? Tom 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 27, 2017 Super User Posted August 27, 2017 I use Fish Formula II (when I can find it) or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of pure anise oil added; this is to mask any odor my plastic may have pick up. Secondly it acts as a lubricant because I fish in grass a lot and it helps my plastic baits slide through easier The only place y'all find 100% pure anise oil is at your local pharmacy, the rest will be Essential Oil which is 40-70% max. I also use MegaStrike ? 2 Quote
Todd2 Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 Fish Sticks is all I use. Goes on like chap stick. No mess. Works. Supposedly 4000 applications per tube, but I'm sure I don't get anywhere near that, maybe a year or two's worth for like $8. Also, fits right in your pocket, so you never have to look for the stuff. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 27, 2017 Super User Posted August 27, 2017 First scents/attractants do work. In the beginning of my interest in bass fishing two decades ago I wanted to test every bass scent/ attractant that was offered, I built a mini wooden carpenters tool box to carry some. I started out with the orginal baitmate bass scent. It works great. Baitmate garlic another good one. Most of the scents I tried worked. The yum, snake brand ect. It's not only an attractant but the bass hang on longer so we can set the hook. i carried a orginal bass scent, garlic scent, craw scent, livebait worm scent for plastics, Shad scent, etc. my trick for using salted plastics on my c rigs I use no scent on the first cast, it I get a nibble and the keeper on my weedless hook comes up open I'm sure it was a hit and a miss. One shot of scent on the next cast is a sure hookup it's a given. fact, i was tossing a crankbait with a shot of scent while reeling it in a guy walks up to me and says do those lures work? but before I could answer I reel a bass in. He says I guess they do, I give that crank a shot of scent and toss it out, he says does that spray work.? Again before I could answer I reel in another bass. He says again I guess that works too? he asked me to give his spinnerbaits a shot of juice too. I did. i believe in using everything in my arsenal bag of tricks. A baits that rattles, a scent, use the correct size and color per water conditions. matched with the correct presentation. Everything works together and gives us an edge. 1 Quote

I have nothing against spray scents, I actually have a few. What I found is they don't work well when kayaking. No place to really spray them without getting scent all over me or the yak. I stick to using them when bank fishing. I had forgotten about Megastrike. I am going to pick up a tube. I noticed they sell it at Field and Stream. Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 28, 2017 Super User Posted August 28, 2017 I don't use spray bottles, the bottle Baitmate comes in has a pour lid, I add a few drops to each sack of plastics. Put a couple drops on the head of of your plastic & let it drip down. Real Craw originally made by Gary Hughes at Riverside Lure Co. was another favorite. 1 Quote
