Rodney Smith Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Does more wraps make the knot stronger (30 lb Sufix 832 braid to mono)?I would think so, but it seems the more wraps I use, the more often I will break. My guides are small, so maybe it is catching on the guides and weakening the knot. What do you think? 1 Quote
swandog Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 I was having the same issue with the smaller guides a lot of newer rods have. I starting adding some Loctite gel and that solved the problem. It adds enough protection to the wraps and is flexible enough it doesn't damage the guides. I have also used Loon's Knot sense and it works as well, but you need a UV light (Sunlight) to cure it. For 30lb braid, I would use atleast 7 wraps (7 up and 7 back). You might get away with less using 50lb and up. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 10 up, 10 back. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 8 & 8... more wraps equals more line weakening friction when tightening the knot. I keep the Alberto knot inside of my mouth immersed in saliva when tightening. I also leave ~3/8" of tag on the PE mainline (back side of knot). oe 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 When I was using it, I would do between 7 and 10. Regardless of number I think up and back should be the same since you are trying to make Chinese fings Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 I use the Albright special knot for leader to line connection. It doesn't require wrapping back down. My rods all have very small guides also and I haven't had any issues with it in a couple years. #30 is my go to braid size and my leaders usually range from #10-15. I use 7-10 wraps. On smaller braid on my spinning rod which is #10 and lighter leaders like 6-8 I use more wraps. Somewhere around 12-14 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 Isn't that just an Albright? The "Special" or Crazy Alberto knot goes up then down. 1 Quote

Honestly, I don't know its exact name. I've seen both examples used with the same name. I just use it haha. 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 I'm kind of the outlier here in that I only use 5 up and down. Have had no slippage using light braids. It also makes a very compact knot. 2 Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted August 25, 2017 Super User Posted August 25, 2017 7 up and down I suppose smaller diameter lines need more to increase surface area Quote
45user Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 5 up and down for me its all about keeping compact for me now when I go saltwater on a regular Alberto I do 15-20 wrap up to 25lbs line modified Alberto I only do 5-6 up and down 2 Quote

crypt Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 5 up 5 down............then you do the hokey pokey......... you know the rest.... Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 26, 2017 Super User Posted August 26, 2017 On thinner leaders (4-8#) I'll go more wraps up, I do not usually do equal wraps up and down. I go more wraps up, less wraps down - sometimes 10 up, 5 down. To be honest, there's no set formula for this knot. As well, the Alberto (Mod'd Albright) has be come my 2nd knot of choice, the main being the simple, but o so reliable (for me) uni-to-uni, usually 5 and 5 wraps. Quote

Super User Further North Posted August 27, 2017 Super User Posted August 27, 2017 The reason Albright/Alberto knots hang up on small guides is that we have 2x line thickness minimum trying to get through the guides. This is why I use the FG knot. Just a hair (one thickness of braid, pulled down tight) over one line thickness works great. On the Alberto (I use it religiously for slippery leader material like Knot-2-Kinky) I don't feel like the number up and down need to be the same, but I do think the number up should exceed the number down. Quote
Falkus Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 I tend to go 8 up/4 down on that knot for 10 to 14 lbs braid line. anything less than 10 lbs I go 10 up/5 down. Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted August 28, 2017 Super User Posted August 28, 2017 Seven up and seven back. If not on the water, I try to pay particular attention to staggering the wraps on the way back...so it looks like a braid....seems to make a cleaner knot, though probably doesn't make much difference, really Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 28, 2017 Super User Posted August 28, 2017 Well, from all these variations in wraps up & down, one thing is perfectly obvious. The Alberto knot is one heck of knot! About the most fool proof, slim joint for leaders to main lines that has ever come down the pike. If I'm using 2# - 4# test mainlines I usually go 9 wraps up and 7 back. Fewer with the heavier bass fishing lines. But as you can see, it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference. Just like the finger-cuff toys we use to get in CrackerJacks boxes back 50 years ago, once it's cinched down, it ain't coming loose! Quote

Super User Montanaro Posted August 28, 2017 Super User Posted August 28, 2017 I tied a poor knot in a rush yesterday and broke off at the leader on a nice fish. Think I didnt put it back through way it came in. Quote
