Ksam1234 Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 So the lake I fish is pretty small and it has submerged weeds in the middle area and that's where I have been catching all the fish. I canoed the whole lake and that seems to be the only area with good vegetation. I have been using a spinnerbait only to catch the fish, throwing it out and reeling it fast enough to just get over the tops of the weeds. Problem is I know there are some huge hogs 8-10 pounders in here but there prob at the bottoms or in between these weeds not chasing down a spinnerbait. How would one go about fishing this to get the huge bass? The weeds are just your typical underwater weeds. Quote
RichF Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 I'd be dunking a big jig or texas rigged creature bait right in the heart of that stuff. 3 Quote

Dens228 Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 I'd go with a Texas rig also. Or drop a weedless jig into it. 1 Quote

Up in western New York .. the 10 pounders are just "hear say" and "folk tale" but a buddy of mine pulled a 8 pound 2 oz out of the lake, 7 pound 7 oz, I got a 6 pound myself. Then another guy showed me last night a fish he got. Couldn't get a weight but he took a pic with 2 beer cans in the mouth to show how wide the mouth. Was and was prob about 27 inches long. Prob another good 7-8 pounds. Hoping there might be bigger 50 minutes ago, RichF said: I'd be dunking a big jig or texas rigged creature bait right in the heart of that stuff. Anything specific ? I have some rage draws or 10 inch ribbon tail worms. And brush hogs I think.. or would you go another route ? 4 minutes ago, Dens228 said: I'd go with a Texas rig also. RichF Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 A rage craw on a big jig is a personal favorite of mine. 1 Quote

I was looking st the arky head or they have terminator series and booyah flipping and pitching skirted jigs. Those are good for weeds ? Quote

If it has a weed guard, use it. I personally use @Siebert Outdoors brush and arky jigs in 3/8. I have had plenty of success with the Terminators though. 1 Quote
Turtle135 Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 I posted this in a similar thread just yesterday. Bullet swim jig heads will knife through weeds pretty well. The one in the image is a 1/4 ounce and the little video clip is a peek at the hydrilla in my local lake in 12 feet of water. 1 Quote

I tried getting ahold of @Siebert Outdoors but they haven't responded yet so I'm gonna try some others at cabarlas. And they do have weed guards so try will be "somewhat weedless " @Turtle135 nice man! The weeds I have are slowly growing to the top of the water so it looks somewhat like that. Nice fish to! 1 Quote

Those weeds stalks at my lake are now four to seven feet tall. They are pushing to the surface but they will run out of time before the growing season ends. The game each day on the water is where will the bass be. Buried in the grass, on the deep weed edge or somewhere in between. 1 Quote

Like, @MassBassin508 said, jigs will definitely get hung up in grass. It doesn't matter what type of head the jig has, there's just no avoiding it. You just gotta learn how to work them through the stuff. It's worth it... 2 Quote

Excited to try them now I would suggest you pick up a three quarter ounce jig and a 1 oz jig but my favorite for fishing that situation is a 3/4 or a one ounce Strike King Slither Rig you can find these at Cabela's looks like this. You're going to want to have enough weight to penetrate that grass and make those fish react 2 Quote
MattC Posted August 28, 2017 Posted August 28, 2017 I've had some decent success tossing 3/8oz jigs around the thick hydrilla edges just popping them off the bottom real hard and letting them sit back on bottom for a minute and repeating, believe they call it "soaking a jig" but not exactly sure on the terminology of it. I also grabbed a few different size Beast Coast Punch skirted weights in 3/8 1/2 and 3/4 and where the grass is thicker I've been punching the 3/4 through it but some areas a jig even with weed guard still gets snagged so I peg the beast coast punch deal on with a creature/craw bait and drag it through the hydrilla and that's produced as well Quote
