Looking for reel under 170 USD for Frogging and other grass things

Hello! I am new on the forums and I am looking for a good reel $160 or less (USD) for frogging and flipping and swim Jigs. I am going to be pairing it with the Okuma Scott Martin TCS rod (7'3" Heavy/Fast). I have been looking at the Daiwa Tatula CT Type R and the Lew's Mach II or Mach Crush. Also I found the Typer R for $140 on EBay from TriaceTackle2016. Anybody know if they are trustworthy? Cause they have a lot of stuff but it's really cheap so I don't know if they are knockoffs. Any suggestions for the reel? Appreciate the help!

You can do a lot better than 140 on Daiwa CT type R everywhere else.

Very happy with my Tat Ct. I have a couple of the standard ones in 7.3:1 and they're my favorite reels, over my SV105, Tat SV, OG zillion, Curado, Chronarch etc. Not sure I'd bother with the Type R version. I think they look ugly and don't really offer any tangible benefits.

For those applications I highly recommend either the Tatula 200 HD or the Lew's wide spool super duty. Both can be had on eBay for much less then $160.

I fish a lot of Daiwas. My frog rod has an original ( larger size) Tatula Type R. I went with the Type R because I wanted a 8-1 left handed reel.

I also fish with 12 baitcasters so I can specialize. It sounds like you are setting up one reel to handle multiple things.  The Tatula CT is what I would suggest you go with and since you want to fish frogs, flipping or pitching and swim jigs I would go for a Tatula CT in 7.3-1 left or right hand retrieve. That choice is personal preference.  The 7.3-1 will be fast enough to fish the frogs and pitch, with but still allow you enough control with the swim jigs.

I do not believe the Tatula CT Type R will give you much for the extra money.  A type R has a couple of corrosion resistant bearings replacing the standard ones, a drag star that is made of a fancier material and  has a tiny bit lighter spool.  It also has more red on it! LOL  I own Daiwa Exceler reels, Tatula Type R reels and Daiwa Tatula CT reels and they all perform about the same.  You can save a few bucks and get a standard Tatula CT or spend about $40 more and get a CT Type R.  I will say I am pleased with all of mine.

Why not match that TCS rod with a Helios TCS? I have a 7.3 and the 8.1, they're great reels.

I was already trying to find the Lew's Wide Spool Super Duty on eBay but couldn't. Thanks for the suggestions... I will look into Tatula. 

Thank you for all your responses! I was able to find the daiwa Lexa 300HS on Amazon for $160. Is this a good deal? I like it because it has super high capacity and I change out lures a lot ?

The Shimano Curado is always a good choice for that stuff.  It's plenty of reel for grass fishing and can be found for around $120 to $140.

Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for. I think I will go for the normal TC or the Daiwa Lexa 300HS Original High Capacity 7.1:1 that I found for $160 on Amazon. I went think the Lexa might be better for me since it holds so much line and I change out lures a lot ??Do you UNK that the 7.1:1 is fast enough for the frogs?  If I miss out on that, then I will probably go with the CT.

How on earth can you come to the decision that a tat CT or a lexa 300 would be interchangeably suitable?

Reel speed doesn't matter with frogs.  You move the frog with the rod tip.  Sure, you can reel them marginally faster with a higher speed reel, but you're missing out if you don't work the frog all the way back to the boat.  Other than that, all you need is a strong, aluminum frame, and a decent drag power.

 

I agree, the Lexa 300 and Tatula CT couldn't on farther ends of the spectrum.  Have you held the Lexa 300?  It's a big boy.

Idk sorry man. I am new to this, just got into about 6 months ago. I have learned anything that I know from YouTube and reading things. I don't have any other good set ups this would be my first "decent" set up. And frogging is my favorite thing to do cause it's so explosive ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so I wanted my first good set up to a frog set up but I didn't not have the money to spend so I can't go to high up. I guess I'll get the CT ? Thanks

Hey dude, if you're still looking into getting a CT take a look at this dudes ebay page I just bought a CT from him for $80, So he is pretty good on his prices where it don't hurt so bad. here is the link for his page, also he has fast shipping as well, mine will be here tomorrow and it has only been 3 days..... It went from Oklahoma to Texas and now it's in Minnesota so not bad considering it took a minor detour lol!

 Me as well. Bought a couple of reels from them. Also check out Simmons sporting goods. Very good deals can be found. Stick with a Tatula CT. Don't bother with the type R. It's really not worth it unless maybe you're salt water fishing. I have both and they fish the same.

Yup.  That CT Type R is fugly.  The original Type R is much nicer looking.  I'm with you...I can't tell any difference in casting performance (with the originals).

I am a Daiwa fan boy so it hurts to say it but get the Shimano Curado I, its on sale now and th highest I have seen it priced as of now is $149.
