Hello all,

First post but I've lurking around here for awhile.

I acquired a like new alphas 105 SV some time ago and I got it all adjusted recently and it is my favorite reel so far. Now I've tasted the SV spool and I want another one but do it all kinda reel.

I've read a lot of praise about SV 103 and seriously thinking about getting one.

I know there is new zillion SV TWS but I'm not too fond of TWing and bigger frame kind of turns me off

Is SV 103 in 7.9 gear ratio good choice for an all round do it all reel? Or would I be better off with zillion SV TWS despite few dislikes or newer Tatula SV TWS?

thanks for your help!

If you don't like large framed reels, the 103 is not for you.

As for all around, I wouldn't consider the 7.9:1 ratio an all around ratio. I would drop down to the 6:1 model for all around purposes.

I read SV 103 is smaller than Zillion SV TWS. My other reels are curado 70 and chronarch 150

is Daiwa 100 size baitcaster bigger than shimano 150 size? Sorry for dumb question..

thanks for the help!

the 103 comes in6.3-1 , 7.3-1 and 8.1-1 I have all three, The reel is not much larger than the Tatula CT of which I have 2. I have no problems with the 7.3-1 but the 6.3 -1 may make you a better all around reel. They can be had for $135 off ebay

Please post a link.  Thanks.  I can find the Tat 103 SV for that price, but not the standard (non-T-wing) SV103

So I'd be better off with Tatula SV TWS and save some money? Performance wise, am I looking at about the same between SV 103 and Tatula SV tws?

Thank you!

I've owned and fished a ton of mid-high end Daiwas (Alphas Type F, OG Zillions, TD Fuegos, TD Sol, Tatula, Tatula CT, Fuego CT, Aggrest, Exceller, Advantages and T-3's).

Tatula SV/CT are the same frame as the Zillion SV.  They should palm the same.  With the Zillion, you gain the floating spool.  Does that increase the performance?  Marginally, it does however open the door for greater tuning options down the road if you want.

The 103SV (the one at TW for $230) is an amazing reel that lacks the T-Wing.  In my opinion that is not actually a bad thing as there are fewer moving parts to wear out and fewer issues with things like leader knots.  I have noticed little to no increase in distance casting a T-wing reel over a "regular".  Palming-wise the 103SV will be just fine.  Look at all the variants that have been made off that frame/design (TD-Z's, TD Fuego, Zillion PE, 50th, BBS, Megabass...).  If there were issues with palming do you think that they would make (and SELL) so many of the variants?  Would models that haven't been made in 5-10 years still command a premium even used, if they didn't palm well?  Personally I'd go with the 103SV over a Tatula or newer Zillion.

Buy the SV 103 and don't look back. They won't be available as long as other reels. Get on the train or it will leave without you.

What he said.

Yep.

I have both the SV103 7.9 and the Tatula SV 6.3. The SV103 is a nicer reel. No doubt about it.

You mentioned not liking reels with larger frames. So while I'm in a minority I will weigh in so you hear another perspective. Maybe I have small girly man hands I don't know.

I tried the SV103 wanting to fall in love with its bullet proof build, high quality finish, buttery smooth feeling, and casting performance. It was a great reel. But I had to return it.  It was too big for my comfort, and I think the primary cause was the height of the reel when mounted on my rods compared to other reels. I can palm and handle a Tatula CT framed variant no problem, as well as a Curado 201i, a Chronarch MGL, 13 Metanium, even a BPS Pro Qualifer.

Comfort and size/palmability are pretty subjective things. I'd say you should definitely try an SV103 and see how it fits you. But he prepared to exchange it for a Zillion SV TWS or Tatula CT variant if it's too large for you, I find those frames sit lower and feel smaller in hand.

Full transparency this issue of comfort is a bigger deal for me maybe then others because I've had some wrist surgery in the past.

Thanks for sharing.

i currently have alpha, curado,Tatula type r and Chronarch but don't have much problem handling them all but I prefer a smaller reel. Catching big fish with smaller reel just feels better :)

Now I need to decide on gear ratio

Most of my reels are 7.x:1-8.1:1 and one lonely curado 200E5

Most of my fishing is bottom dragging and just little bit of jerkbait and cranking.

Maybe I should go with 6.3 as suggested

Thank you all for your help!

I have a pair of sv105's, a zillion sv tws, and a sv103, all bought in that order.

Skip the zillion and go right for the sv103.  Other the the spool being a little over braked it is better (for me anyway) in every way then the zillion.  It is going to seem heavy as hell compared to the sv105 but it picks up right where that reel leaves off and, as a guy with pretty small hands, palms way way better then I thought it would.

So I ended up ordering SV 103 in 6.3:1 gear

I will update you how I like it once I receive the reel and fish it :)

Thanks all again for your helps!

Well Brian, we love to hear from members how they felt about their purchase and how I for one want to know what you think of your Diawa. Glad to have you as part of the group.

Got the reel today. Between work out and traffic in so cal I didn't get a chance to spool it and throw

so far just playing with it, it feels like alpha I have. Of course SV spool spins forever

I think I'm going to like it!
