Kbissonnette98 Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 I bought my first jig a couple of weeks ago and didn't know much about them. I ended up buying a swim jig and didn't know how to use. I ended up dragging it on the bottom and I caught a lot of fish. It ended up getting snagged. After it got snagged I found out that I had the wrong kind of jig for how I was fishing. Now I'm wondering what kind of jig I should use for dragging on a soft bottom. 1 Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted August 21, 2017 Super User Posted August 21, 2017 football head or arkie style head . then again if you're catching fish , use what's working ... Quote
Super User NHBull Posted August 21, 2017 Super User Posted August 21, 2017 Football or ball jig gets the call. I am enjoying the ball http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Buckeye_Lures_G-Man_Ballin_Out_Jig/descpage-BOJ.html Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 With a soft/muck bottom, a jig with the line tie above its center will get bogged down less than one with the tie at the nose. So will a lighter jig, or one with a slow fall rate. You had good success with a swim jig, so if there's any weeds you occasionally run across, I'd stick with that. Otherwise, either of the above are good choices. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 21, 2017 Super User Posted August 21, 2017 A light arky jig is what I use on a soft bottom. The football jig can work as well as long as you keep it light as well otherwise the wide head ends up pushing too much mud/silt. Quote

Apparently the bass liked your choice & their opinion is the only one that matters! Last couple years I started throwing swim jigs more & one thing I'll do with em is when I see productive looking dense cover I'll flip/pitch it right in there. But according to the technique specific mindset that's the "wrong" jig. Oh by the way I do something with my spinnerbait! Sooner or later all jigs get snagged ? 1 Quote

I almost prefer to throw a spinnerbait into snaggy cover over a jig, I swear they get caught up a lot less and when they do the wire has enough flex to let me pop it free. Has anyone ever made a pitching-specific spinnerbait? Heavy head, large colorado blade to slow the fall, something like that? 1 Quote

Stanley use to make a single spin with a Wedge Colorado blade, Hildebrandt Go Getter is another good one. I actually use a big willow leaf, letting helicopter down! 1 Quote
