New curado handle/spool issue

Hello I just purchased a new curado 201hg from ebay. When I turn the handle the spool does not turn correctly(like it is not making full contact with the gears?)  and when the slightest tension is placed on the spool the handle and line guide turn fine but the spool stops. even when slowly turning the handle the spool will sometimes not turn. I took the spool out and where the spool sits in seems to be where it is not turning correctly. I do not think something is right but this is my first shimano so don't know if there is something easy to check before I contact the seller. I have adjusted the drag and spool tension and it does not make a difference. Thanks. Hope you kinda get the idea of what I'm saying.

yep tightened drag and loosened drag as well as spool tension.

i did not and i do not think i even can. any tension and the spool will not turn.

Like others have chimed in, it definitely sounds like something is up with your drag. Did you remove the handle for any reason?

I had an old Shimano B-100 Mag do this when fishing. I had to tighten the drag and it worked. Line the reel and try it.

did not remove the handle. it is a brand new reel. i opened it up and was just looking at it and noticed something was up with the spool. so i suppose i will get in contact with the seller. It is not the drag. I have turned it every which way.

My guess is somewhere along the line the reel has been disassembled and not reassembled properly. Either something is missing from the drag stack or the pinion is not engaging the spool. Pull the spool and see if the bottom of the pinion turns. Verify the spool pin is in place. Check that the clutch engages positively when the handle is turned. If that checks out drag is all that's left.

then my concern is that the reel was sold as brand new and it should not have been taken apart before.

 

I apologize ahead of time do not know the correct term for the parts I am going to try to describe.

 

When I remove the spool, the gold part on the handle side where the spool arm is inserted, that is what is not rotating correctly. the spool sits in there just fine but what turns it is slipping and not rotating the spool.

The gold piece is the bottom of the pinion I mentioned. Does the thumbar appear to work properly? I understand your displeasure with the seller. They may or may not be to blame directly. It should be an easy fix though. If you'd like me to help let me know.

It looks like you barely turned the drag star. Turn it several times.  I think that's all that's wrong.

its not. i have had it locked down and every single click in between.

ok i feel like an idiot now. i think i was turning the  drag the wrong way so i was loosening instead of tightening. it is the opposite way to tighten and loosen as my revo.

A revo tightens counterclockwise?

i dont know now i am so confused. holding this curado in my hand as it was on a rod, i had to turn the drag away from me to tighten it(counterclock wise if looking at handle side). im pretty sure my revo i turn it twords me. this is a left hand model if that makes a difference.

They all tighten the same,  away from you as if the rod were in your hand, pointed towards the water.

Return the reel?

New curado doesn't need to turn the drag star a lot like old system.

The direction to tighten the drag is to push the top of the star away from you as you hold the facing forward. This is    clockwise on a right hand reel or opposite/ counter clockwise on a lefty. Call me if you'd like.

yup i went out and checked my revo and it does indeed tighten the same way. im crazy. seriously thank you all.

My buddy is learning how to use a baitcaster with a Shakespeare Alpha (right handed) and as I was spoiling it for him I had to tighten the drag counter clockwise which I thought was od. I haven't seen that from any other brand.

Regardless of which way they tighten, the mechanism is a thread. When you turn the star to tighten you can see it physically move towards the side cover. When you loosen the drag you can see it move away from the side cover (to the handle). Just look at it and see what it is actually doing. 

 

In the case of the OP, especially after watching the video, despite the claim it had been both loosened and tightened in previous posts, it was completely apparent there was nothing wrong with the reel (yeah, sure a broken out of the box Shimano, yeah right, lol) and that the star wheel was fully turned out, loosened, so much so it was jamming into the handle. From this position it would probably take several turns of the wheel to engage the drag surfaces.
