Wagster Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 What brand line and size do you suggest for a DX 703SF? I have it paired with a Ballistic EX2500H. I'm using this setup for Senkos and tubes and fishing clear water. I'm trying to decide if I should go braid to a leader or straight fluro. Thanks, Billy Quote

Super User NHBull Posted August 18, 2017 Super User Posted August 18, 2017 I am a braid to leader guy, unless I can go all braid for non-bottom baits. My spinning reels get 10 lb 832 as it does sink well My casters get 10-30 lb depending on purpose. 2 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted August 18, 2017 Super User Posted August 18, 2017 Braid is much easier to manage on spinning gear, there's not arguing that. I personally use both and see no reel advantage either has over the other except for the manageability of braid on a spinning reel spool. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted August 19, 2017 Super User Posted August 19, 2017 The one you threw here was like all of my spinning reel setups. Half a spool of Stren original mono in 14 pound test. That is my standard backing and the rest of the spool is full of Berkley Original Fused FireLine in 14 pound test ( 6 pound diameter) and a 5 foot P Line CXX Moss green 8 pound leader 1 Quote
JRez Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 I like braid+fluoro leader. Power Pro 40lb with 10lb Invisx. I think straight fluoro is excessive. You can do half mono (reel backing) and half fluoro. So you can use the fluoro for other reels or leader use. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted August 19, 2017 Super User Posted August 19, 2017 I would personally go with braid to fluoro, something like 20lb braid to 8 or 10lb fluoro leader. Braid has no line twist on spinning reels, and I feel like it largely is the most versatile overall as it can give you better line strength and if you want less visibility then just tie on a leader. My biggest arguement against using braid and the only reason I still have 12lb mono on one of my spinning reels is that I will occasionally use the rod to throw crankbaits and it's a fast action rod so the extra stretch in mono is a plus, but as the DX 703SF is medium fast action, you should be fine with braid, my spinning rods are fast action. Super User WRB Posted August 19, 2017 Super User Posted August 19, 2017 The combination of braid to FC is popular with spinning outfits to help manage line twist, however 2 knots negate any advantage this combo may offer. 1. Fluorocarbon lines only advantage is it's heavier than mono and tends to sink. Bass are not line shy fish, no reason to use FC for bass using low light refraction, bass don't care. The fact that FC has poor knot strength and it requires 2 knots to use braid to FC line is all you need to know. 2. If small diameter line with high strength is you goal then look at mono or Copolymer lines like Maxima Ultra a Green 5 or 6 lb mono. If FC is your confidence line than look at Sunline Sniper 7 lb. 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted August 19, 2017 Super User Posted August 19, 2017 I use 6lb yhb or 15 lb 832 to leader on my dx 743 1 Quote
Falkus Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 10 lb sufix 832 braid line in Ghost White - 7 feet Leader (10lbs seaguar red label) Reason is that I like to watch my line to see if it moves...if it does move quick, I know that there is something at the bottom trying to steal my senko ! 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted August 21, 2017 Super User Posted August 21, 2017 i have that rod with a pflueger supreme xt on it and i use 15lb braid on mine and then add a fluoro leader if i want one. 1 Quote
