Man DH, those are some monsters you got over the years. I'd give my non-casting arm to bring in just one of those beasts. :notworthy:

Wow Dwight! I think some of those were the first pics you showed me of Erie smallies when  we first met at Merlands on BOQ. I've been drooling ever since! The 5-15 in my pic is still my PB.....had a good guide that day!

Hope we you are doing well my friend...

My favorite season is spring pre spawn. Jerkbaits #1 technique.

Those all from Erie? One of the pics looks like it's off Chambers Island in Door County.

Yes all from PA waters of Erie. If one picture was off Chambers Island in Door County you & I would be fishing together.

Those are tanks.  Great pics as always, Dwight.  I'm admittedly a lousy jerk bait fisherman.  Are they in rotation most of the year?   Are you fishing them above deep fish? in suspended schools?  Or do you primarily just treat them as a pre-spawn and fall bait?

I love using jerk baits all the time. They are most effective in the spring & fall when the bass are more shallow as compared to the rest of the year. Most of the fish I catch are suspended or are coming up to hit the baits. Depth of water is usually in the 15' to 25' range. I do fish them over deeper water when the visibility is good up to 40'. Predominantly the fish are singles or in smaller groups as opposed to schooled fish.

When you're finding them that deep, is it a seasonal thing?  I'd imagine in the summer, they're going to be sitting above or at the thermocline, no?  Are you typically seeing thermoclines over 30' deep in Erie?

Great lake smallmouth are big water nomads. They winter deep then migrate shallow for pre spawn & spawn. Post spawn they go deep again after recovery from spawning. Then in the fall they migrate shallow again before going deep for the winter. So yes it is seasonal. The thermocline doesn't really have an effect since it is usually deeper than the fish which will go 40-60 feet deep in mid summer. Thermoclines on Erie differ from traditional lakes because of depth & wave/wind actions. Also you need to understand that the great lakes flush themselves mutiple times per year depending upon depth with Erie flushing the most about 11 times per year.
