Recommendations on a set up for Jigs/worms/swimbaits

Hey all

Looking to get a new set up that could cover jigging(1/2 oz) in mixed cover, also good for senko weighted about 1/4 oz, carolina rig 1/2 oz or so and the same for a swim bait.  I have a good rod for shakey head and have been happy with the powell rod I got.  Im thinking a bait caster this time around as I dont have one and would like to get more comfortable with them (I have used them).  Was thinking something 7-3 med heavy fast but am not sure what to do for a reel, is 6.4:1 okay or too slow, any recommendations would be great on size and brand.  i use 20lb seagar 832 with a 10-12lb invizx leader and am very happy with it. Ive read a bit saying to go with heavier braid so it doesnt cut into the spool, can anyone elaborate on whether this is a big deal or not?  Looking to spend 200-250

Dobyns FR 734C with Daiwa TACT 100 HS reel is within your budget.

You need to define "swimbait"?

30-40 lb test braid is close to 10 to 12 lb mono/FC line diameter and the proper choice for bait casting reels. I would suggest starting out with 12 lb Big Game to learn how to cast and fish the bait casting reel.

Thanks @WRBby swimbait i meant keitech on a waited hook, usually a 4/0 owner 1/8th oz. What speed reel would you recommend.  Nice fish by the way

Where I differ is the size of line and admittedly am in the minority.

I don't have anything bigger than 20 lb and a couple with 10 lb on my casters and have NEVER had an issue with digging in.

 

If you want to use less than 30 and are concerned, look to smackdown as it does have a nice coating which helps in prevention.

The line dig with thinner braids is usually the result of unconscious actions of the angler trying to yank something stuck free with rod and reel. This exertion aids in making line dig into itself and more so the thinner the braid. It won't happen by itself. So if you get snagged up, take the rod and reel out of the yanking equation by only tugging the line with hands. Be mindful that if you really pull hard, braid can slice into skin like a hot knife through butter. I usually keep a small (but thick) wooden dowel and wrap the braid around it a few times. Now I can yank the line as hard as I want with zero chance for line dig.  I imagine a leather glove could also do the trick. Line is virtually not an issue for anymore, even at 20# test. (Power pro)
