Welcome to the forum. A good setup for panfish is a 6'0''-6'6'' medium action rod, size 1000-3000 spinning reel, and 6-8 pound test mono. You can get a lighter setup such as a ultra light if you want.

Bamboo rod and 8 feet of mono line.

But really, I own two setups for panfish. Both are pflueger trion reels on gander mountain vortex medium light 6 foot rods. Work excellent for me and roughly a 45 dollar setup.

Personally, I use a catch more fish 4'6" Ultra Light Spinning Combo for my panfish/trout needs.

However, I do fish freshwater so your mileage may vary.

The setup cost no more than 30$ depending on where you look.

How 'sporting' do you want to be about it?  For panfish and trout, I use:

  • 5' UL Berkeley Lightning Rod (spinning)
  • Pflueger Trion spinning reel 4520GX
  • 4lb Berkeley Trilene XL mono

I wish I had a longer rod - like something around 6'... But, I'm able to cast far enough on ponds and across any pool or stream here, so it's enough.

I have <$60 in the setup...  And it's tons of fun!
