Fishingmickey Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 Hello all, I'm looking to find some good fishing in southern Maine. Smallmouth preferably/hopefully. But pretty much any type of gamefish will do. My sweetie and I along with another couple are planning on spending three or four days renting a cottage or cabin and I hope to put us on some good fish. I've been looking at Lake Sebago primarily. I know there are a bunch of other lakes nearby. Hoping to hear from some of the local Mainer's for advice. Fishingmickey Quote
BassB8Caster Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Are you bank fishing? Kayak? Canoe? Boat? Sebago is a huge lake btw. Quote
Fishingmickey Posted August 9, 2017 Author Posted August 9, 2017 Hello BassBB, Yes it is a very large lake, I'm looking at renting a boat. A couple of the cottages I have looked at have kayak's or canoes available. FM Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Sebago sucks. If you want to catch fish you should probably find another body of water. Not only is the fishing very slow there are a LOT of recreational boaters out there. It can be dead calm, no sign of wind, and the place will still be like an ocean because of boat traffic. Message me and I can point you in the right direction. 1 Quote
Janderson45 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 I've fished only two lakes in Maine but I loved them both for different reasons. China Lake, China ME and Cobboseecontee Lake, Manchester, ME They're both pretty sizeable as well, but not as large as Sebago. I did slightly better at China, but I've fished it twice now and Cobbo only once two years ago when I wasn't as good of a fisherman. Quote
"hamma" Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Sebago itself is a tough lake to fish. I will agree to, especially this time of year. Some of the areas other water bodies are some of the best IMHO. Be it for smallies or buckets. Augusta area, down east, or sebago areas? is all good. Even Great East, Mousam lake, Arrowhead, and other waters south of the Sebago area offer some awesome Maine bass fishing. I know someone who lives in California now, but still has ties to my hometown. He comes out every year for 3 months to visit/vacation. Hangs around Boston for a week or so,.. Picks up his boat at moms home and heads up to just over the Maine border. Gets his lic./sticker at kittery trading post and starts his quest not far away from there. And works his way all the way to New Brunswick. The bass fishing is that good, and that widespread. Plus, your in Maine. Bass fish the early am bite,.. head in, get lobstah/clambake for lunch by the roadside, and fish another lake for the afternoon. Quote
Fishingmickey Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 Hello again and thanks for the replies everyone! To fill things out a little bit more. We're visiting friends in North Yarmouth. My thinking is to rent a lake front cabin or cottage. I've found a good many of the cottages/cabins that have kayak's or canoe's available. I'm hoping to find a lake within a hour or two's drive from there. From what I've researched so far there is quite a few good lakes in a hours drive. I'm hoping to rent a fishing/power boat from a marina on the lake or close by. Still searching hard. Fishingmickey Quote
Fishingmickey Posted August 16, 2017 Author Posted August 16, 2017 Well I pulled the trigger on a "camp" yesterday. Got reservations for 9/4 - 9/7. Going to be fishing Great Pond and probably Long Pond in the Belgrade lakes chain. I will nail down the boat tomorrow. 17' aluminium with a 25hp Honda. Any fishing tips would be greatly appreciated. Did some research on you tube and it seems like Smallies and land locked salmon are the major targets. Not sure on the Pike populations there. Thanks in advance! Fishingmickey Quote
Janderson45 Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Funny story, reading this thread made me book a weekend camping trip in Maine too... haha. I'll be at Kezar lake in Maine from sep 1st-4th. Rented a boat up there, same deal a 17' aluminum with 25hp outboard ? Quote

Along with your baits of choice, I'd have at the ready: 4" and 6" green pumpkin senkos to rig texas and wacky, some perch or gold colored hard jerkbaits, Green Pumpkin and PBJ TRD on a Ned rig, sexy shad Keitechs, some natural colored crankbaits to run all depths, chart/white spinnerbaits. I'd also have some t-rigged worms for largemouth in grass. And don't overlook Webber Pond in Vassalboro. Great largemouth fishery. Can't wait to hear some reports from you guys! Shout if you get stuck. Quote

A couple weeks ago the biggest trail in Maine fished there, Man vs. Bass. A 7 fish bag of 25.40 lbs won. Another team had a 7.84 lunker. It is also my favorite lake. Amazing views of the white mountains and equally amazing fishing. Quote
RedSam Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I'll second Cobboseecontee. I live 5 min away. Big lake, lots of islands and coves. Good bass fishing in general, both large and smallmouth. I actually use a fishing kayak, but you'll see boats of all sizes out there. Quote
Fishingmickey Posted September 18, 2017 Author Posted September 18, 2017 Got some good Smallmouth to about three pounds and several northern to maybe 5-6 lbs. Didn't get to fish as much as I would have liked to. I did find a couple of good spots. The Smallies (most of them) came off one point and the Northerns were behind a island with weed patches growing to about five feet in 10-11' of water. Fishingmickey 1 Quote
BassB8Caster Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 good to hear! Maine definitely has some big fish! Quote
