What's wrong with my 2014 Etec 115 horse?

It recently started smoking a lot. Seems to run fine. Started fine first time, had to hold the key for a second to start it second time, and third and fourth time started right up. This is all a three hour period. 

 

I don't ever think its smoked before.

 

 

This is new Evinrude XD100 oil I got from Domo Online. It was fully serviced last winter by a dealer.

When you hold the key down the fuel pump runs extra gasoline into the fuel injectors and causes the fuel mixture to burn rich for a few seconds. The only thing that you changed was the oil type, try another source.

Did you program the outboard for XD100?  If its programmed for XD50 this may be your issue.  With the etecs, you should always have it programmed for the oil you're using and stick with it.

I ran it a few times after I held the key down so it shouldn't have been running rich any more.

For my 2 cents worth.  Doesn't that motor have something like a five year warranty.  If it's still under warranty, why not have a professional answer your question on if it has a problem or not.

Also, just to double check things, I would go to a dealer and get a gallon of XD-100, dump what's in the tank back into a jug and refill it with the dealer's oil, then run it long enough to purge the system and then see if it smokes.  I know Domo is a big company, but anytime you go outside the OEM network, there is always a chance for fakes, and at what a gallon of XD-100 cost, there is plenty of money to be made selling fakes.  Don't think they can't fake it, you have people selling fake medications everyday, they have gotten to the point you have to hope what you get, even from and big chain store, is the real stuff.  If there is money to be made, somebody will counterfeit it.

 

Another thing, looking at your video, it's hard to tell if that's oil smoke or water vapor, and with synthetic oils, it can be hard to tell them apart.  If it's water vapor, you darn sure don't want to run it until it's repaired because even a small amount of water getting into a cylinder will melt a piston in a heartbeat.  Steam disappears almost immediately as it leaves the engine, oil smoke will kind of linger around.  Also, if you hold you hand in front of the exhaust, it will usually form a lot of condensation on your hand if it's steam, but in humid areas, any exhaust will do that.

 

With all that said, to answer your question, NO, that motor should not be smoking and there is a problem somewhere and if it's fake oil, the BRP will stick you with a huge bill for repairing it.

Not sure. I think it was around 80' air and no clue water. 

 

Called dealership and they said most likely steam. Either water was hot or thermostat maybe going bad.

Steam was my first guess. That will happen during colder mornings and warmer water temps. If the air temp was 80 though that would be odd to see steam.

80' and it was 9pm....maybe cooling down? Had just ran the motor for 5 minutes.

Just watch the video, looks like steam to me, smoke doesn't dissipate that quickly.

Is that ok or does that mean the engine is getting too hot and the exhaust is steam rather than water?

Should be under warranty. Steam usually indicates very little water is getting past the thermostat, probably need a new thermostat. The engine over heat alarm should go off if it's too hot, but don't chance blowing the power head.

Thanks. I want to take it in but looks like the dealership is booked for a month. 

 

If its under warranty I don't pay anything, right?

Correct. Take your video to the dealer and ask them what they think it is. If it's a warranty issue they should fix it ASAP, this isn't a standard or scheduled maintenance service.

Update:

 

Went out fishing today and saw the smoke again. It is definitely smoke and not steam. Gave off a slight burning smell. No alarms went off and motor ran fine. 

 

If it is a thermostat problem the motor is just getting too hot?

 

 

I only make 2 five minute runs to and from my fishing spot, could I go fishing 1 more time before I bring the boat into the dealer or should I bring it in ASAP?

You should take it in ASAP. Neglect can void a warranty.

Update:

 

So, got it into the shop and they said that it some how got put into winterize mode and has been running that way the last couple of trips. 

 

Said its not a warranty issue issue and I have to pay for it. 

 

I don't mind paying for it but I thought winterize mode was a one time deal and that once you did that it would automatically go back to normal mode because I've never heard of turning it off from winterize mode. 

 

Am I wrong? Is something wrong with it? Shouldn't it automatically go back to normal mode after winterize mode? If it doesn't and it's supposed to, then isn't something wrong?

Pay for what, labor or the diagnostics? It sounds like your dealer isn't very trust worthy!

Did they tell you how to put the engine in winterized mode or how to set it up for normal use??

Labor or I guess since it's not covered by warranty. 

 

Haven't talked to them yet, will tomorrow when I go to pick my boat up. 

 

Basically I meant to say if it's stuck in "winterize mode" isn't it not supposed to do that.

Talked to them again. 

 

Apparently it came out of winterize mode 3 hours ago. Well, I said that's when I had it winterized last year by the dealership for its 3 year maintenance. So, it hasn't been running in winterize mode this whole time which is good. 

 

He said 2 strokes smoke. Well, I said it never smoked at all last year. He said rings wear in, it gets used, smoke is normal. I said as much smoke as in the video, he said yes. 

 

So, I guess that answers it.
