Any advantages to using a lower pound test fishing line?

Does fishing the fishing lines physical weight, or diameter affect your casting in any way?

 

I have a ultra light reel, and it can take a maximum of 8 pound braid and I would assume 8 pound fluorocarbon as well. If I can find a higher pound rating with roughly the same diameter will there be no issues with casting?

Ultra lite spinning reels have small spool diameter designed for small diameter line ine less thean .0089 dia, use the line diameters your guide.

Braid + leader should work well. 8# FC seems awfully thick and unmanageable for an ultralight reel.

 

A line with a smaller diameter would probably cast further too.

 

To answer your question in the title, I believe in using the lightest line I think I can get away with. Lures seem to have better/ more natural action.

Yes, as was mentioned above you want to pay more attention to the diameter of the line. Just fyi, Tackle Warehouse lists the diameter of each line (see the examples below). Even if your setup may say it is rated for "8 pound test" you can actually use much heavier test braid. That thinner line will generally give you greater casting distance.

Sometimes line diameter and visibility are crucial, but not with every presentation.
