So there is a small pond I fish, and using worms, hogs etc Texas style, I can catch them. But rigging up senkos wacky, has yet to land me a fish. Tons of bites and pulls bit no hooksets. I went from a 5" down to a 3" or 4" and still nothing.

Using a weedless wacky hook and octopus owner both on 1/0.

Any idea?

Green sunfish terrorize a wacky rig on a lot of the lakes I fish, but you'll hook one of them occasionally.

IMO, lose the weedless hook, they don't do much more than protect you for hooking fish.

I caught a huge green sunfish on a wacky rigged 5" senko. They were even nipping at my chatterbait. But to the OP, I miss way too many fish on wacky rigs when I go smaller than 3/0. I use Gamakatsu finesse widegap hooks. I tried 2/0 and 1/0 and I just missed too many fish. Weed guards are a waste, all they do is get in the way. If you need to go weedless than simply t-rig it.

There really isn't much a green sunfish won't attack. One of my favorite local lakes has so many shad that the sunfish get a pass from the predator fish, which makes them very bold I guess. Jigs, 10" worms, bladed jigs, buzzbaits, doesn't matter they attack it. The swimbait biters are the worst though.

Those things are annoying. It feels better to know that they are not only a pest in my life. Lol

funny thing about fishing, my results are exactly opposite of this. I started out at 2/0 and am down to #1 or #2 gammys now. I still have some 1/0 left and maybe one or two 2/0, but my biggest fish this year were on #2 hooks. I also have stopped paying the extra money for the "weedless" and simply buy the finesse wide gap hooks from Gamakatsu.

I had something like that happen this summer on a big swim bait as well. I couldn't figure out why a small bream with a tiny, tiny mouth hit a big bait. Maybe it was territorial and trying to nip a fin to chase it off rather than looking for a meal.

The biggest fish I caught this year is the one in profile pic. Caught him on wacky rigged senko on 3/3 gammy. I have caught 2 fish with the 2/0s and and I missed everything with the 1/0s which had that stupid weed guard. Crazy how certain things work for certain people. I just held the 2/0 and 3/0 hooks next to each other and they practically the same size. Not sure why I miss fish on the 2/0.

I don't wacky rig much, but when i did, the best hook for hookup ratio was a smaller worm hook. You know, the kind you T rig with. They weren't weedless, but I could just go get them if they made it to the bottom and got hung.

I just use a 2/0 worm hook for my wacky rigging.  In the past I used the finesse wide gap hooks but never really cared for the hook up ratio and the fact on days when I was not very alert the small hook was generally down the throat more than I wanted. I switched to the 2/0 worm hook after watching a video of FLW Pro David Dudley talking about wacky rigging and the fact that these were the hooks he uses to wacky rig so I switched to a worm hook to try and have never looked back.  Good hook ups and very rarely do they get them down the throat too far. I find them to be the best for all aspects of wacky rigging

Since I went with the owner circle hooks, I never looked back.

No more gut hooked fish

And seldom miss

I seldom let them fall on fully stacked kine and I too am a line watcher

There is bluegill in there. Those little things are ruthless lol. But these feel bigger than them, maybe just a big bluegill.

When Bluegill hit a Soft stick they can nearly take the rod out of your hands. Usually feels like multiple fast taps I call a machine gun.

When bass hit you may feel a single tap or just weight.

When you feel any sort of tap (use braid) just stop and wait. Wait 5-10 seconds and slowly reel up the slack. A bluegill will have let go. A bass will usually sit with it or slowly move off. Then set the hook.

Weedless hooks have a bad reputation. My experience with them is nearly 90% hook ups. Much better chance of hook up with a weedless hook than Texas rig for me. I use a 2/0 weedless and set the hook hard.

So wait that few seconds after you feel the bite and you will know if its a bass.

Gaps on those little Gammies is way to short. Awful hooks.

The Wicked Wacky are great.

To me if youre not fishing wacky weedless you  are not throwing where the fish are.
