riverbasser Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Have a BPS pro qualifier only about 2 years old and just recently noticed that when I tighten up the spool it will not completely hold. I can turn the handle in reverse, not freely but there is definately something wrong. I have cleaned this reel myself before and it could be my fault but I have taken it back apart just to check, but I don't know which components are responsible for the anti reverse. Any ideas? Thanks @Delaware Valley Tackle Quote
shackman Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Did you oil your anti reverse needle bearings? They need to be dry. Quote

shackman Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Inside the anti reverse housing, the sleeve on the drive shaft runs through it. Quote
riverbasser Posted August 2, 2017 Author Posted August 2, 2017 Ok I know what you mean now. I didn't oil them but I did grease them. But I greased all of my reels there and the rest are fine. Should they not be lubed at all? Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted August 2, 2017 Super User Posted August 2, 2017 Pressed into the handle side sideplate will be the anti reverse bearing. Usually in a plastic cage that's got a metal housing around the outside of it. It's got roughly 12 or so small needle bearings in it. They should only be very lightly oiled not greased. As in add a drop to a q-tip and run it around the inside of the AR bearing. The driveshaft collar sits inside of it once the reel is assembled. Don't oil the collar because that would end up being too much oil on the AR bearing. Your AR will resemble the one pictured. 2 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 some models tolerate over lubricating better than others but that and thorough cleaning/flushing are always where I start. If you can't get it out of the case flush with Simple Green and rinse with hot water. Let us know how you make out. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 3, 2017 Super User Posted August 3, 2017 Also note that on some reels you can install the anti-reverse bearing upside down so your reel will crank backwards. I have not felt that dumb in a long time, I tore down and rebuilt that reel a dozen times before some kind soul online clued me into what I had done. Quote

Seemed to be working well just turning the sleeve by hand but once it was back together I can still turn the crank backwards more than I should. Seems I might need a new bearing? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 That's what it sounds like. Will you DIY the repair? Quote
