Adding a third treble to a jerkbait

My favorite jerkbait it a KVD300, but lately I want a smaller profile like the KVD200 but I wand three hooks. Has anyone ever added a third hook to a two hook jerkbait? I think I might try it.

I generally remove the tail hook on three hooked jerk baits.  Too many hooks in the eyes.

I'm with Jay on this one, I also remove a treble on 3 hook baits. I normally remove the middle one. Helps save your hands some, and the fish from getting multiple hooks. I never never noticed a difference in the catch rate either.

It has always been my contention that the bass I'm actually targeting with a 200 size bait will usually devour it.

If she can't, well then, he's not The Right Fish.

May I ask why the extra treble? Perhaps upgrading the existing trebles will help?

I respectfully disagree. I'm a Tournament angler, and my fun fishing is my practice. I want every bite in the boat. One more treble ups the chances. But I admit, I haven't thrown a 200 by itself. I should try it first.

All my trebles on all my hard Baits have upgraded hooks. I just want another hook. I may not need it, but just wanted to see if anyone else acted on my thought.

The 200 comes in at 4.5 inches and the 300 is listed at 4.75 inches ~ granted the profile of the 300 makes it seem somewhat "Bigger".

I'll agree fishing it a bit could help you make a decent assessment.

It's ALWAYS fun, even the 'bad' days. But I still want to maximize my efficiency out there. I thought a third treble on a smaller bait would help.

Adding another treble to a hard bait that isn't supposed to have one will most likely ruin the action of the bait.  Esp a suspending jerkbait.  It'll sink instead of suspend unless you use some float dots or something.

I'll be interested to see if anyone has and what their success has been with the modified lure too, @Megastink.

 

Personally, beyond swapping out and upgrading trebles, I wouldn't alter a bait at all especially if it involves drilling into it but that's just me.

Adding the third hook will probably make the jerkbait sink instead of suspend.

I don't know how the exact bait is weighted but I know that even my less expensive jerkbaits that suspend well will sink or have the action drastically affected when just switching to a more stout hook. Adding another hook would no doubt make it sink uless it is a floating bait which that one isn't. Just to possibly put your mid at ease, all the years I've been throwing jerkbaits to PA, NY, and MD bass for a long time and I can tell that on 3 hook baits your advantage comes from that middle hook getting an outside part of the mouth on keeper size fish, something a tournament angler likes to have. However, the 2 hook baits don't seem to suffer from 1 less set of trebles, if the fish has the front hook it usually has it deeper in the mouth, and when I need to catch them I go to a Pointer 78, it isn't my favorite but that bait only has 2 trebles and my landing percentage is probably better than most of my 3 hook baits.

Looks like the answer is no . I  cant imagine doing such a complex modification .
