I've been looking to get a couple of higher speed baitcasters, 8:1 or similar. I typically prefer round reels (specifically Ambassadeurs) to low profile reels, but 6.3:1 seems the be the highest ratio you can get.

When I compare reel specs, though, my older ambassadeurs - and the current C4 models - at 6.3:1 bring in 30" of line for every rotation. The 8:1 reels I'm looking at (Daiwa Tatula or Fuego models) bring in 33", which isn't exactly a huge benefit.

Is is there any benefit to higher gearing besides retrieve rate? Because frankly, I feel more comfortable with and enjoy the action of the Ambassadeurs and at 30" per crank, I'm getting the speed I want for frogs and flipping and such. And not for nothing, the ambassadeurs in my experience cast farther with no drama, retrieve smoother, and are more indestructible than any other reels I've ever used.

Just hoping to get a few perspectives here; make sure I'm not missing some vital criteria before I just go ahead and pick up a new C4 for a dedicated topwater rig.

Welcome to the forum.  Not that I know of.  That is the whole reason behind higher gears.
