bma3 Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 Wanted to know if this spool is underfilled and if so, how should I add more line because it is not connected to the main spool of line anymore. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted July 30, 2017 Super User Posted July 30, 2017 Yeah, I would add more, but it isn't the end of the world 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 30, 2017 Super User Posted July 30, 2017 Just respool. I like to start with a half of my spool loaded with Stren Clear Blue mono in 14 pound test. Now you can buy a 150 yard spool of braid and get ti to fill two reels. If you end up like you are now you can add a new half a spool of braid and you are ready to go. 1 Quote
38 Super Fan Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 That's very low for my taste. Your reel will cast a lot better when the spool is filled properly. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted July 30, 2017 Super User Posted July 30, 2017 Yes, way underspooled. Go outside and pull it all off in the yard or down the sidewalk (yes, your neighbors will look at you funny - lol), then add some mono or other cheap line on the empty spool as backing, then connect the lines together and rewind all the braid back on until full. 3 Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 keep the braid on the spool right where it is. use a uni to uni knot (or albright) to connect some 10-12lb mono to the braid. Fill the spool the rest of the way with mono leaving 1/8" of spool bare. now go outside and tie the mono to a tree branch and walk off all the line. go back to the tree and tie the mono to spool. reel line in keeping tension on it with fingers. your spool will be perfectly filled 2 Quote

The reason my spool is so low right now is because of a monster birds nest that I had to cut out... I don't have a ton of line left on my main spool. 17 minutes ago, ClackerBuzz said: keep the braid on the spool right where it is. use a uni to uni knot (or albright) to connect some 10-12lb mono to the braid. Do it anyway? Quote

Do it anyway? in that case strip off the braid and throw away the mono backing. put the braid on spool first. then add new mono backing to fill spool perfect. your line will be on backwards so tie to tree and follow steps to put line on correctly Quote

Tim Kelly Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 There's a knack to unpicking braid birdsnests. I've been using braid for the better part of 20 years and I haven't had to cut out a birdsnest since very early on, when I didn't understand how to unpick them. Sometimes they look impossible and the braid has cut into the layers below, but it always comes out, either by pulling the main line or the loops. Quote

This was the first time I've ever had to pick one out, normally they come out pretty easily but I spent probably 45mins on this one before I gave up. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 Yeah, sometimes you just have to pick up another rod! Quote
