Looking for a great deal on a spinning reel

I just saw this today.  Dicks sells the Pflueger President spinning reels for $59.99 normally. They have them on sale for $49.99 right now plus Pflueger has a $10 rebate going on right now. Dicks has that listed on their website right now too, so they should have the forms printable online and on paper in the stores.  Using the rebate makes the reel cost  $39.99

 

 Anytime you go in a Dicks store and buy anything there is a customer survey mentioned on the back of the receipt. The person behind the register is supposed to mention it to you.  I always go in the store and buy a Jawbone brand jig for like $3.00. I use them to fish with and as a casting plug. I also use that receipt to go online and fill out that survey. I then print out the $10 off coupon that the survey gives as a thank you.

 

By doing this, that $59.99 reel would end up costing you $29.99 right now. Not bad for a very reliable spinning reel.  If you have an old reel that has seen better days, or you are thinking about a new setup this should help keep the cost down and still give you a 9 ball bearing reel.

So may I ask a dumb question? I'm looking to get into Bass fishing; however, I'm not sure what is the weight range for a reel.  Several people recommended this reel as a good starter and durable reel, but is the weight to low? Sorry rookie question I'm sure, thanks

There aren't weight ranges on reels, it will throw anything you would ever want it to.  They are my favorite spinning reel out of the four or five brands that I own or have owned, granted none were over 80$ msrp and I never paid more than 40$, but it outperformed all of them easily and have held up to years of abuse.

Yes.  Use the listed line weights as a guide for you to pick the right size reel.  Don't buy a reel that lists 100 yds of 4# line if you plan on fishing with 10#.  You will severely limit the amount of line you can get on the reel.

Kinda think of it this way.If I was setting up a 5'6" to 6 foot ultra light combo then I would pick a 6920 or 6925.  These are fine for chasing trout with small lures or for going after panfish.

 

All of the President reels my wife and I own are on medium light and medium bass rods.  We have a couple of 6930 and 4 6935 reels.  The 6930 is just a tad smaller than the 6935 and balances a little nicer on our 6 foot G Loomis SJR 721 rods.  These are only 6 footers but fish awesome, so we continue to use them.

The 6935 is my preference on some of our longer rods because they balance on them so well.

Many anglers would stick with the 6930  and that is fine.  I fish for bass as well as stripers and often hook up with BIG blue cats where we fish so I like the extra line.

Lets talk line.  The 6930 suggest a max of 145 yards of 6 pound mono.  The 6935 lists 185 yards of 8 pound mono. These are plenty for most situations.  If you wished to go up from 6 pound test to 8 pound test there would be no problem, you would just spool a little less line, still no problem. I would not suggest spooling say 14 pound test mono on a 6930.  It would not work well.

For me I do the following.  I spool half my reel with 12 pound Stren mono first, then I spool 14 pound Berkley FireLine braid ( 6 pound mono diameter) the rest of the way.  I prefer to fish with the small diameter braid and in clear water I add a 5 foot mono or copolymer leader.  My leader is usually 8 pound test.  This setup does two things. I cut the cost of spooling up all of my reels since I only need to replace 1/2 of a spool per reel when it is time.  The braid is much more sensitive and I like the way FireLine casts and retrieves. Very rarely do I have to contend with any line twists or birds nests.

 

Paul G    I am curious how they get to the $39.98? Is that the $49.97 (sale price) + the $10 rebate?  If so I always do the two trip approach. Trip one I buy a jig, go home and fill out  my customer survey and return with my printed $10 off coupon.  I have saved some money over time using those customer surveys.
