A couple months ago, I purchased two Abu Garcia Revo 3 SX's when they were on sale for $63.  I've used one of them (7.1.1) for the past few months for light inshore fishing in brackish water and some bass fishing. That said, for a reel that was supposed to be a $100+ reel, I am not too impressed with it.  So now my mission is to tell the other reel that I purchased that is still new in box and use that money toward a combo that I would like to be in the $250 range. Preferably not more than that.  Could I get some rod and reel suggestions? I've been keeping my eye on curados and tatula's. Should I spend 180 for a reel and 70 for a rod? Or try to keep it closer in terms of their prices? I typically don't throw anything that weighs more than 1/2 oz and it's hard to find an affordable rod that condones to 1/8 oz - 3/4. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, I've had a Gen3 STX and I'm not very happy with it, good luck selling it lol. Lew's makes a super sweet Custom SLP that was just released at ICAST. It's 80% of your budget though haha. I'd also check out the Inshore LFS. I can't help with the rod as I am no inshore fisherman, Illinois is pretty far.

When I bought my kayak last year for inshore fishing, I was looking into baitcasters that would hold up in the salt. I heavily considered the Daiwa Coastal (200 size) and the Daiwa Lexa HD (300 size). I ended up sticking to spinning tackle for my inshore fishing.

I recently got into freshwater fishing and have picked up some baitcasters (a couple Tatula CTs and some Shimano reels) but have yet to use them in the salt. I'm sure with proper maintenance, most freshwater reels would do just fine in salt/brackish water. Of the reels I currently own, the CT Type-R would probably be the first reel I'd use in saltwater, with its 2 corrosion resistant bearings. I've had a positive experience with my Daiwa reels and would not hesitate to recommend the Tatulas. I believe the new Shimano Curado K and the Chronarch G are saltwater ready, but they'll eat up more of your budget. I may pick up Lexa HD or Shimano Tranx in the fall for striper and heavier bottom fishing.

You can get the CT Type-R on eBay for about $130 or the Coastal for about $150 leaving you with $100-120 for a rod of your choice. Rods are much easier to maintain, I usually just rinse mine off after every trip to prevent rust. Just pick a rod that'll handle the lures you plan to throw.
