LxVE Bassin Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 So I have a dilemna. The Shimano Curado I and the Lew's Custom Speed Spool are the same price and on sale for 40% off. Which one would you recommend, they both feel nice in my hand. The gear ratios are 7.2.1 and 7.5.1 so very similar. If I were to buy one it would go on my frog rod. What do you guys suggest? Does anybody own both of them? Quote

Nor-Cal Basser Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I'm not a huge Curado I fan, but I'll take any Shimano over any Lews reels. 3 Quote
Hulkster Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I have never fished a lews but I love my curado 200i. I have the PG version. 1 Quote
Janderson45 Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I've got 6 of the Curado I's and counting... don't feel the need to upgrade to the new Curado K although I'm sure it's great too. The Curado I is really just such a workhorse and phenomenal reel for the price... I guess I can't comment on longevity as the oldest Curado I that I own is only about 18 months old I believe, but I'm sure they'll last a good long time. I recommend them to all of my friends... I fish all Curado's and Chronarch's now pretty much... The Curado I turned me into a shimano fan boy and the newer Chronarch's are just out of this world good for the price. If I had to really nit-pick the Curado I there's only really two things I'd complain about. The first thing is the placement of the lever that opens the side plate for access to brakes and spool... occasionally (very rarely if I'm being honest) I can nudge it with a finger and not realize that it's in the "open" position... the only other thing I'd gripe about is I like longer handles.. the handle on the Curado isn't too small, I believe it's 86mm or 88mm, but I prefer the swept 90mm-96mm handles they have on the Chronarch MGL's. I own exactly 1 Lews reel, a super duty, and while I don't quite hate it... I definitely don't like it either. I use it exclusively for C-rigging as it's got a higher liner capacity for the 20lb fluorocarbon mainline I've got it spooled up with. Of course there are plenty of people that love lews.. I'm just not one of them. The SVS braking on the new Shimano reels is the "real deal" in my opinion. 2 Quote

A5BLASTER Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Lews hand's down every time and yes I have owned both and the Lews reels always out last the others and I don't maintain my reels in any way shape or form. Have a Lews on my frog rod now that is on its third year of frog and punching duty and it has never skipped a beat. 1 Quote

I was actually going to buy them both but the Custom Speed Spool was gone. 2 Quote

Because Lews in its current incarnation hasn't even been around as long as the Shimano Curado. So, trying to understand how you can say Lews reels outlasts the others. I know tons of guys, myself included, that have Shimano Curados that are over a decade old and still running hard. Now, I've never owned a Lews - just Shimanos and Daiwas - can you tell me why you feel its so much better or explain your post a little more? Thanks. Quote
A5BLASTER Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 It's simple really, five years of hardcore bass fishing, the last three on toldeo bend. Started with three Lews reels and seven shimano reels, three years later the shimano's all died and have been replaced by lews, and the first three Lews reels I bought or still being used. I do not maintain my gear in anyway, I bought it to use not look at it, so I run my gear hard, add to that fact I live on the best lake in the world to fish for bass. I probably fish three to four times the amount of days in a given year then 90% of anglers. I came home wensday night from work and have fished every morning and evening since I got back. Just to give y'all a idea of how much I fish. I'm glad you and others you know have had a good track record with yalls choice of reel, I did not and the Lews reels lasted longer. At the end of the day a man can own whatever he would like it's his money, I just did as others and posted my thoughts on what I feel is the better reel. And yes I have been useing Shimano reels for years in the marsh and swamps of southwest louisiana to catch fresh and saltwater fish so I'm well aware of how old the shimano curado and Lews product lines or compared to each other. Hope this explained it a lil better I was a bit vague in my first post, and sorry if my words are a bit sharp it's been one of those days so far. 1 Quote
