Me 13 year old minn Kota all terrain 40lb trolling motor quit on me. So I'm looking to upgrade.

I am looking at the ultrex and fortrex 24v 80lb.

The deciding factor for me will be how well the ultrex can handle the close quarters heavy cover situations such as a cypress swamp.

Is the foot petal responsive enough to maneuver around easily?

You should go for the ultrex if you want the spot lock ability you shouldnt have a problem with tight places its a little different then wire guide but works well once you get the hang of it.

What size boat do you have ? That might be over kill. My boat had a 43# thrust I changed it out to a 50 # thrust whish does just fine.

Boat size and brand is my screen name. Bass tracker grizzly edition 16' length 54" bottom.

I like a little overkill in the power department.

I may not need a new one after all though. I got the old one running again. My battery connections were a dull gray color. I shined it up with a wire brush and hooked it back up. Now it works.

Ill try and load test it later this week and see what happens.

Power deploy and stow from anywhere in the boat is pretty darned nice.  As is spot lock.  And probably other features I haven't even figured out yet.

My ultrex is awesome. Spot lock is ridiculously nice to have especially in wind/current. Foot pedal is the most responsive I've used. Turning is effortless /w the foot pedal. Can't say enough good things about it. Worth it's price tag for sure.

I like what I'm hearing about the ultrex. When my all terrain does decide to quit I will most likely be going with the ultrex.

I've never met anyone who was unhappy because they had "too much power" in their trolling motor.

Mick, the Ulterra is the Min Kota trolling motor that has power deploy.  It also has power trim so you can run it up when you need to go into skinny water.

The Ultrex is a sort of hybrid between cable steer and electric steer.  Sort of the "best of both worlds and Minn Kota sees it.

I know about the Ulterra since I own one.  I was making the case for two of its nicest features.  Now that I have used it, will never go back.  Even though it's pretty expensive.  also nice to have both remote and foot pedal control.

I missed that, since this topic was about the Ultrex.  Sorry about that.

As a fellow Ulterra owner, I'm with you...though if the Ultrex had power trim I could live without the power deploy.

The shaft of the Ultrex does not like bumping into things.  The Foretrex has a much more durable shaft.  I only bring this up as you mentioned Cyprus swamps...

That's interesting, had not head that.

Does it break, or does something else happen?

Weird...

I've inadvertently run a Terrova and an Ulterra into rocks up in Canada at full speed (about 3 1/2 MPH on my boat),  boat is about 2,000 lbs. loaded up.

Twice with the Terrova, once with the Ulterra.  Shaft flexed, I almost went swimming...but no damage to the TM shaft.

I think the shaft on the Ultrex is the same as those???

Wonder what they're doing to them?

...I wonder if they're like rod blanks; hit one with a lure in May, the rod snaps under load in September?

Different shafts.  Those 2 are round, Ultrex has flats sides and rounded sections.

Weird. Ran mine into stumps, rocks, fallen trees and the accidental dock. Never had an issue.

i Have a 24 volt Ultrex and it has a round shaft. maybe the 36 volt motors are different.

in my opinion it is extremely durable.

I smacked a stump dead on with the motor on high. Nearly threw me out of the boat. The shaft bowed, but snapped right back. I have also hit  a few rocks with it .The prop looks a little rough, but other than that it is fine.

I'm starting to think there was other damage to the shafts that was magnified by the pros running into stuff.

Pros are not known for taking the best care of their equipment...Nor should they be, their job is to win.

I rammed my ulterra into my trailer at full speed and had no problems
