Curious if anyone uses med light casting rods and what types of bait you throw??

I have a tfo. And a 13 for the same price point I like the 13. Much better. I use them both with shimano 50s. And 8 -10 pound mono or flouro. They're my go to drop shots, light shakey swing heads. And I use one with mono to throw small poppers and such. 4 inch weightless senkos basically anything in the. 25oz range

Id love to pick up a phenix with a daiwa sv105...but it seems so situational Im not sure if Id benefit much for the cost.

I have a 6'7 steez MH with a tdz that casts weighless baits and small poppers pretty easily anyway.

But to answer your question, Id throw small topwaters, small jerkbaits, small cranks, senkos and soft jerkbaits.  Occasionally a finesse jig.  There are other techniques but that is what Id use it for.

I have a Shimano Cumara 7'6" ML/Mod-fast I throw crankbaits with also a ned rig at times or light-ish 1/8 head w/4" swing impact paddle tails.

I have a St Croix LTB 6'9" ML/XF I throw senkos ikas and will use heavier jighead 1/4 w/fat paddle tails.

I use a Gloomis Bronze back paired with a Shimano Curado 70 and 6# fluorocarbon.  I throw Ned rigs with it.

6'6" ML Carbonlite (black)

Not using it a lot these days, but I use it for all manner

of soft plastics (lighter side) like drop shot, wacky, thin

wire TX rigs, and so forth.

Loads up extremely well allowing me to cast very light

baits.

I have a G. Loomis 2-power (medium) casting rod that is rated similar to other manufacturer's ML (1/8-3/8 ounce). It is my river smallmouth rod and is used for finesse jigs, light jig heads/plastic, and light t-rigs (all 3/16 ounce lead or less).

Thanks guys that's what I had figured, use for jerk baits, ned/finesse rigs, light poppers and what not.  I appreciate all the input guys.  thanks

Baitcast:

7' MLF Crankin' Stick - trebles

7' ML HMG - little of everything

6' 10" ML NV - new-2-me but imagine whatever falls in its lure range

6' 6" MLM Aetos - trebles

7' 1" MLF Recon 2 - had out once & was using a finesse worm

and if 1/8 minimum qualifies for a ML then a 6' 10" MF Smallmouth - little of everything

Spinning:

6' 9" ML Villain - seldom fish a spinning rod anymore, but this has the power for single hooks

6' Lightning - trebles...used to also fish nightwalkers, leeches, crayfish & grubs with it

7' MF Aetos is rated down to 1/16 oz.  Never seen the water.

Had both a Phenix 712 and 713. Light and Medium light power rods. The 712 was a very fun rod paired with a tdz and a bfs spool for throwing neds and other baits under 1/4oz. The 713 was also a fun rod for things just a bit heavier like 1/4oz poppers and balsa squarebills.

Medium light or 2 power casting rods are specialized or application specific for finesse fishing. Keep in mind a NRX 852 medium lihght rod is very different from a Shimano Cumara ML 7'1" fast action rod. Reason is no standard to rate rods exists.

Is the cumara rated for lighter lures?

I have a 6'6'' Shimano Compere med light. I had such a large percentage of bass come off  using  it that it no longer gets used .

Pure coincidence that I tried a ML cranking rod this week as I am considerering a ML or M for next yr......After an hr, I have decided that I can throw everything better on a Med spinning rod and have a better chance of getting it in the boat.

I have a Phenix 682, a Major Craft GEC 63ML, and a Loomis CR721.  I rotate through them trying to find my idea light/medium light casting rod.  I use them for small plastics and cranks when fishing more open areas.  I still use a ML spinning combo for tighter quarters and smaller waters where casting distance is irrelevant. I have not had any real issues loosing fish on any of them once I made sure to use thinner hooks.  Even though the CR721 can throw light jigs, I was never able to get good hook sets with it unless I picked jigs based on hook thickness.

I was initially looking for two rods, one for plastics and one for small cranks, but I am starting to think that I can use a single rod for both.

I built a 7’ MHX ML and loaded it with 10# braid that has been used for small and large chatter baits, Texas rigged plastics, crankbaits up to ¾ oz. and bass jigs with plastic trailers. No problems with hook sets. A heavier rod works better to work jigs when deep into the cabbage or snapping crankbaits through thicker weeds, but in open or sparse weeds catching fish is about the same.

And you won't find it at places like TW.  It was a first generation rod that is no longer being offered.  Paste this into Google search  " 6'6" MLM aetos casting rod on ebay "  Asking price is $89.99 plus $16 expedited shipping.  I wouldn't wait too long to buy it if I were you.  Send smalljaw67 a PM about this rod.  I bought it based on his opinion.  I had gotten so I didn't like 6'6" rods.  Too short.  I absolutely love this rod.

Here is a link to the seller, but I don't know if it will be automatically deleted.  Some links are not allowed.

EDIT:  Got to thinking about it this afternoon and I am pretty sure I need a second 6'6" MLM Aetos.  :teeth:
