Tim Kelly Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Which knot do you use when fishing a jig through weeds? You get a nicely designed jig that goes through the weeds without catching up but the knot to the mono/fluoro has it's tag end facing back up towards the rod and catches the weeds. Other than a half blood (clinch) knot, which I'm not keen on, all my other knots leave the tag facing forward. Uni, San Diego, Palomar etc. Any suggestions, other than braid direct? Quote

Super User NHBull Posted July 25, 2017 Super User Posted July 25, 2017 The strongest knots are usually doubled, so you really end up with 3 tags, so regardless at least 1 tag would be facing up the line. A doubled uni is a slightly larger connection but tends to be rounder and your able to cut the tags really close.......... the old fishermans knot knot is what you are looking for, but is low in knot strength Quote
Bucky205 Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 An orvis knot will put your tag end down towards the hook. It's not as strong as a palomar though. https://www.saltstrong.com/articles/orvis-knot/ 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 26, 2017 Super User Posted July 26, 2017 I personal tie a Palomar on everything & have no issues when fishing grass. Question, do you run your line through the eye with the bottom of the jig facing you? 1 Quote

Question, do you run your line through the eye with the bottom of the jig facing you? I use palomar and uni knots only. Palomar on anything I can get back through the loop before securing it and a uni on everything else. I see you asked about running the line through the eye of the jig with the bottom facing you. I have a question about that, it may sound stupid, but is the bottom of the jig the side that has the hook facing away or toward you? I've only tied them on with the hook side facing me. Is that wrong? Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 26, 2017 Super User Posted July 26, 2017 The top of a jig is where the weed guard is! I've seen guys tie their jig on pushing the line though the eye from the top (horizontal eye). Most jig sold are not designed for fishing grass they are designed for brush or timber. Terry Oldham's Eye-Max Jigs are the most effective Grass Jig Made! Siebert Outdoors is a close second The next issue is ya aint fishing vertical enough, casting jigs long distance in grass is asking to get hung up. 1 Quote

The top 2 are both Arkie jigs 3/8oz one on the left is a bluegill kind of color and the one on the right is a black and blue. The one bottom left is a 1/4oz Strike King swim jig I think and the bottom right is a 3/8oz football head jig not sure of brand name at the moment. They have black and blue colors also. Should I be tying them on with the bottom facing me? Football head jig has a horizontal eye, should I tie it on with the line coming from the head end going towards the hook point? I want to thank you in advance for your kindness and advice. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted July 26, 2017 Author Posted July 26, 2017 That Orvis knot looks interesting. I will give that a try. My grass jigs all have vertical line ties, but I'm intrigued why you ask? 1 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted July 26, 2017 Super User Posted July 26, 2017 I use the Trilene almost exclusively . Palomar is great too , the Trilene is just what I'm use to and I always get a nice strong , neat knot . 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 26, 2017 Super User Posted July 26, 2017 I tie jigs with a palomar knot. I make sure that the knot is good and tight then I trim the tag end as close to the knot as I can get. 2 Quote

Turkey sandwich Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 I've been using the Trilene knot for years and have had no problems. It's strong, the tag rarely catches weeds, and is great with leaders since there's very little waste. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted August 5, 2017 Author Posted August 5, 2017 I think the trilene is probably the best of the batch, and will be giving it a trial. Thanks. Quote
CTBassin860 Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 I use a Palomar with 2 wraps. Never had an issue in the weeds. Quote
