Kevinator1 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Hey guys, How many of you have a reels in the past fail due to a worn kick lever? I have had so many that it has always made me wonder why manufacturers didn't upgrade the part to stainless steel...(probably because they want them to wear out so if you can't get a replacement part you have to buy a new reel) Well, finally Quantum has stepped up to the plate and will be making the kick lever out of stainless steel starting with the new Tour S3 and Smoke S3 models. Never been a huge Quantum guy but i might try these out. Seems like they are making a lot of higher end upgrades and keeping the reels within a decent price. I love me some durability. 1 Quote
Nor-Cal Basser Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Interesting. I've never cared for Quantum personally, but that's a nice upgrade over many other reels. I may have to give them another shot. Quote

WdyCrankbait Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Good to hear Quantum doing it right! I love my EXO's and Smoke! I think a lot of people are thrown off by the bearings first couple of times casting. But, they cast very far! Wdy Quote
craww Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Never had an issue but have wondered why a part that gets torqued on a bit like that is always plastic. Good on em for trying to improve. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 25, 2017 Super User Posted July 25, 2017 Meanwhile, Daiwa and Shimano have been steel all along. 3 Quote

Yep....which is good on that part.....but how about those Shimano spinning reel friction rings? Mega failure....but every company has their problems at some point. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 25, 2017 Super User Posted July 25, 2017 So, is this a contest about what reel manu drops the ball, or is this about Quantum making claims about "fixing" something that was never an issue in the first place? The only company I know of that doesn't feature an entirely steel engagement mechanism is Abu. And despite my reservations, after a many years, they do not wear out. In other words, this is marketing, not innovation. 1 Quote

Our newest design features a stainless steel kick lever that will not wear out and we’ve added an anti-corrosion barrier plate between the frame and kick lever system to eliminate sticking issues created from saltwater corrosion..... And like you, i have worked on reels for years...and I have witnessed Abu reels with worn kick levers, indentations so bad the lever wouldn't reset the clutch. Just observations...no big deal. Quote
