Turf Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 Nothing good to report on this side. Lox was pretty dead for me on Saturday. Fished 6:30 until about 9:30. Fished bigger as I mentioned above for the majority of the time but did throw some senkos and flukes as well, but nothing going. Talked to 3 other guys as well who also had little to no luck. Had 1 small guy on the day, lost a decent fish due to a bad knot (shame on me), and missed a big mudfish who blew up on my frog. Otherwise nothing going. Hope you all had better luck. Quote
Super User geo g Posted August 6, 2017 Super User Posted August 6, 2017 That's just fishing for you, this time of year. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted August 6, 2017 Super User Posted August 6, 2017 Bass fishing is still very good this time of year, you just have to fish low light periods such as dawn, dusk, cloudy days, nighttime, etc. Besides fishing in the middle of the day right now isn't much fun with +90 degree heat and +105 real feel temperatures. The +11 UV index doesn't help much either. Quote

I went snakehead fishing this morning and caught 3 of them between 25-28 inches in less than 2 hours of fishing. Not a bad way to spend a morning if you ask me. Nice job on the 3 snakes. And sure I fish for many other species, just not nearly as much as I go bass fishing. Can't say I've tried snakehead fishing specifically although have caught a couple while fishing for bass. What gear do you use when targeting snakehead? Also are you mainly fishing canals? Quote

In terms of lures what do you throw? The two I caught, one crushed a ribbit frog I was ripping across the top and another I caught up on a lipless crank bait. I assume they like fast action, spinners baits? shallow crankbaits, etc.? Just curious what specifically you typically throw at them. I know they are prevalent around an area I bank fish from occasionally right off of Atlantic and the Sawgrass. Perhaps I will give it a go next weekend. 1 Quote

You can catch them on other typical bass lures as well. I highly recommend you give snakehead fishing a try, they are biting very well right now and fight much better than a bass of equal size. My biggest snakehead to date was over 10 pounds and fought just like a decent sized snook going to the mangroves. Besides, bass fishing all the time can get boring quickly and the big bass are more likely to die when released in the summer than during cooler weather( high water temperatures can increase chances of delayed released mortality in fish like largemouth bass). Super User soflabasser Posted August 10, 2017 Super User Posted August 10, 2017 @pondbassin101 That's why I mentioned fishing at dawn, dusk, nighttime, coudly days, and other lowlight conditions a couple responses above. The bass are still biting good, you just have to fish at times they will bite best and figure out what the bass want. I have been catching lots of quality largemouth bass in the 18-22'' range as bycatch while fishing for peacock bass and bullseye snakehead, would do much better if I was specifically targeting bass. I almost never go midday fishing. Quote

I bank fish Quiet Waters, Crystal Lake and Sailboat Lake frequently during my lunch hour. Quote

I've had some decent luck in terms of bass but it's clear that other species including snakehead, pickerel, mudfish and other junk fish are prevalent. Caught two pickerel last time I was out there. It's wide open in terms of what you might come up with. The attachment might be hard to see but there is a little parking area right by where I have highlighted the box. The entrance is directly from Atlantic, just go straight instead of getting on the Sawgrass. It will take you straight to the parking lot. Most of the spots are on east side of the levee but there are a couple on the west side as well. That's actually where I caught the two pickerel last time out. Good luck. 1 Quote
