GeeseMelvin Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 As mentioned in my introduction post, I've neglected my boat over the past 4 years. Well, I've also neglected all my rods and reels. I'm back in action fishing almost daily with line that's gotta be 4 years old. Landed a handful of 13-16 inchers and one that was about 3 pounds. Well this evening my foolishness caught up to me. Ran a crankbait over some brush that's by a dock and a giant ate it. Peeled drag from right to left then SNAP! Long gone, probably would have been a personal best. So with that I ask you guys, what're your personal favorite fluorocarbon and mono lines? Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 20, 2017 Super User Posted July 20, 2017 Flouro - SeaGuar I used to use the one in the yellow and blue box but it got too pricey so I switched to the cheaper red label and it seems to work just fine. Whatever you do, I highly recommend staying away from Vanish. Why because when you have a fish on, that's exactly what it's going to do... Vanish. P-Line - Their CX is a great line and CXX when you need a stouter line. If there were a draw (this doesn't bother me however but I know it does other anglers) back, the line has some memory to it. Mono - To be honest, I've tried Stren, Spiderwire, Trilene XL, XT and Big Game, Ande, Sufix and they're all good. Some companies like Sufix and Trilene ahave a "tough" version (XT) and a "finer" version (XL and Elite) that can also suit your preferences. 1 Quote
Bucky205 Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Stren Original, Clear/Blue Fluorescent mono. I also like the fact in lights up like a glow stick under a UV headlamp at night. I am finding myself getting more and more away from flourocarbon. I haven't been using all flouro for that long, at first I really liked the sensitivity, and I liked the fact it is almost invisible, but I hate the memory. Flouro is expensive and looks like a slinky after 30 days. I refuse to pay more money for conditioner to try and keep the memory down. I still tend to use flouro as leaders on my braid a lot, but thats about it. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 20, 2017 Super User Posted July 20, 2017 Fluorocarbon...don't know. Have only used 3 brands and 2 of them came on used reels. The one I purchased was cheap. Mono....Many...Siege probably being my favorite, but need to try some Spiderwire Ultimate Ultracast as smalljaw67 says it is the best mono he has ever used. Have 8# on a finesse reel, but it hasn't seen much use yet. Co-Polymer...AN40, but trying some McCoy Mean Green which gets great reviews. Also have some XXX to try. Lots of people on here like Y0-Zuri Hybrid. Finally bought some to give a try. Purchased for its diameter rather than test rating. You might want to consider that when buying a new line. Some lines have a high breaking strength because they have a larger diameter than other lines of the same rating. Quote

GeeseMelvin Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 Good suggestions. I'll grab multiple diff lines that y'all have suggested. Losing big fish due to old line should not be an issue. Quote
GeeseMelvin Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 So let me ask y'all this. I opened a storage container I had and found a bunch of fishing stuff including an unopened spool of 17 lb fluorocarbon. Although it's old, it hasn't been weathered by the sun or water at all. What're the chances that it's still aye okay? Quote

Philo Beddoe Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 I've been using Seaguar Red Label for fluoro. Ive tried more expensive fluoro but couldnt justify the cost difference. As for mono, Big Game is my go to. Then again, maybe I'm just a cheapskate 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted July 22, 2017 Super User Posted July 22, 2017 How many rods and reels do you have to re-spool? I would grab a good co-poly for the bulk of the work and then a good flouro for your jig rod. I like 15lb p-line 100% for pitching and lite punch setups. The good news is its 250 yards so it will fill to complete spools unlike most of the others. 1 Quote

Might flirt with braid too, I've never spoiled any of my reels with braid. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted July 22, 2017 Super User Posted July 22, 2017 Braid on your spinning setups is the best bang for the buck. I hate line twist. 1 Quote

bigfruits Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 I'd go with: Yo-Zuri Hybrid copoly for an all around line Sunline Sniper FC (Shooter for bottom contact if you want to spend the $) Defier for walking topwater baits. Armilo for swimbaits PP braid 1 Quote
CAnglr Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 I have always had good luck with segar fluorocarbon line but recently switched to the pLine co polymer. Because it is a co polymer and isn't quite as stiff and seems to lay better on the spools being less stiff at least for me 1 Quote
Pikeman12 Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 I use only spinning setups, But right now i am a big fan of Suffix pro mix. I have been getting it in in 10 lb mono and have had 0 problems. I used to use the berkley trilene big game which is real good as well. Stay away from vanish and spiderwire in my opinion. As far as flouro goes, I have only used it on my cat rod and in P-line 30 lb. My buddy uses P line in 10 lb i believe and he also loves it. I used braid once and didn't like it so I have always mainly stuck to mono. 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 For me it is Seaguar InvizX flouro in 15lb, .013 diameter (same as some flouros in 12lb). Flexible and strong. I spool so much of it I bought a 1000yd spool on Amazon for $89. At $27 for a 200yd spool that is a whopping savings.. 1 Quote

I need to just go in on a very large spool of something with all the reels I need to freshen up. Quote
DCales84 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Yo-Zuri Hybrid in tests from 10-20lb on casting rods and 6lb for spinning. Not a fan of fluorocarbon due to costs. I only use braid for a small number applications as well. Yo-Zuri is inexpensive, strong, and very manageable. 1 Quote
