Nattyboh74 Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 I got back into fishing this year, and thinking back, I used a clinch knot for everything lol. Currently using braid with a mono leader, but may goto braid on the MH rod and no leader. I think I read that braid can't use some mono knots, as it's too slick? Anyway... Looking forward, what are some knot recommendations for the following: Spinner baits Cranks Poppers/top water Hooks ( plastics, lizards etc ) Jigs Braid to mono leaders Maybe one knot for hooks and one knot for everything else would suffice? Thanks guys. Quote
sully420 Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Use a Palomar knot for braid if you really want to use an improved clinch knot for braid you just need to wrap it more times than you would for mono. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 18, 2017 Super User Posted July 18, 2017 I use a Palomar knot for single Hooks Duncan (Also know as a Pitzen and 16/20) for treble hooks Alberto knot for leader 1 Quote
Nattyboh74 Posted July 18, 2017 Author Posted July 18, 2017 When you say treble ooks, you mean any lure with treble good , crank, top water etc? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 18, 2017 Global Moderator Posted July 18, 2017 Palomar for braid San Diego Jam for flouro I don't use mono or leaders Mike Quote
CroakHunter Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Any fishing knot will work great, IF tied correctly. Quote
BassGirl71 Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I use the Palomar for tying every lure on, whether it's braid, mono or copolymer. For mono leader I use a double-uni, which I think is the same thing people call an Alberto knot. I find it easier to just use one knot for almost everything. Quote
GrumpyOlPhartte Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 @BassGirl71: The Alberto (Crazy Alberto) knot is apparently an improvement on the Albright knot, if I understand correctly. If you're curious, the Albright knot and Alberto knot can be found in several YouTube vids as well as by searching with your web browser. I've recently learned from a more knowledgeable guy than I that if you can tie the Uni-Uni for your leader, you are good to go. The Alberto is a little more challenging to tie but does, in my experience, present a lower profile for passing through your guides. And, if you are either a world champion knitter or a spider on steroids you can attempt the FG knot. Hope this helps clear up the double-uni/Alberto misconception. Good luck! 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted July 19, 2017 Super User Posted July 19, 2017 If you want to KISS, the only knots you need to know is the Uni. From there it is Uni to Uni and doubled Uni. That said If I am on the dock tying FC to Braid, I like the FG.....on the water it would be uni to uni. I only tie braid directly to terminal tackle if it is surface or swim bait. If it is big, I use the doubled uni that can be tricky to learn. Side note......if the Palomar is easy for you, use it for braid only. Note 2..... Any knot tied PROPERLY will be fine since most of us are using bigger than needed line 1 Quote
hawgenvy Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I use the San Diego Jam for all knots to hooks or lures. 1 Quote
shackman Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 The uni is all I tie and has been for years. Mono, braid, Fluoro, co-poly. Quote

Same here for all lures. Bassgirl: Like Grumpy said, the Alberto is an improved Albright....not a Double Uni. OP: I started fishing using the Clinch Knot. Went to the Improved Clinch Knot. Learned of the Uni Knot and have been using it every since. I often lay down a base using cheap mono when spooling a reel...regardless of final line. I use an Alberto to splice the lines. I think I have used a leader twice. Both times I used the Alberto....tied at home. My fingers aren't as nimble as they were 50 years ago. Plus I haven't been willing to take the necessary practice time to get good tying it freehand. Quote
