Jaderose Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 Oddly enough, I've kinda given up on Lowes and it's even sorta fishing related. Been putting a floor in an old 16' jon boat I have and wanted to get it good and sealed up. Went to Lowes and bought some Olympia sealant/stain. Wasn't even concerned about the color until I realized that I could actually pick a color...lol. I chose a color called Amaretto. Kind of a reddish brown. Thought it might look ok with the green of the boat. Kid mixed up it up while I wandered around a little. When I picked it up, I noticed that there was no color daub on top of the can like there pretty much always is and the kid seemed in a pretty big hurry to get rid of me. Get the stuff home and it's pink...and I don't mean a little. I took it back and just made them dump a bunch of brown in it and now it's only SORTA pink. I'm just gonna paint over it. I know I could demand my money back and all but I just don't care that much about it. With that said, that kid knew he screwed up and tried to hide it. I do not appreciate that. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 17, 2017 Super User Posted July 17, 2017 There is a Lowe's about 10 minutes from my house. Menard's and Home Depot are both about 20 minutes away. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 23, 2017 Super User Posted July 23, 2017 ^^ Same. Lowes is closer to me ,1/2 the time of going to HD. Checkout is always faster. I dont go there first though usually. I like the smaller chain we have called Curry- Thomas hardware. Its less hassle to get to than lowes, and is never crowded.Much smaller store, but they usually have whatever I need, mainly because Im fixing something. One if their stores even has a gunsmith. If they dont have what I need, or if Im remodeling something,I go to Lowes. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 24, 2017 Super User Posted July 24, 2017 I shop both lowes and Home Depot no menards here. I found that Home Depot got a lot more items and varieties than lowes even though you have to shop online and have them ship to store. My wife loves lowes because it is cleaner and seem to have less ppl. I don't care as long as I get item I want at the cheapest. 1 Quote
XpressJeff Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 When I retired from the military I went to work as a government contractor developing black helicopters for the Army. After about 18 years I retired completely. That did not last long. When I was TOLD to get out of the house I took a job part time at Lowe's. Now I just do nothing , 'cept fish and work on Dottie Rae ('69 Dart, with independent suspension and a 516 cid engine) Quote
Bassin' Brad Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 It's Lowe's for me, just can't handle all the orange smocks at HD lol. Nah both have their good and bad. But I find myself at Lowe's more often. Quote
Bucky205 Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Easy answer, which has it in stock at the best price, it is the deciding factor for most people Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 31, 2017 Super User Posted July 31, 2017 Home Depot for me, we don't have Menard's. Actually, I prefer the local Ace store for a lot of things. They're more expensive but have a lot of the odd ball stuff that the big stores don't carry. Quote
FordsnFishin Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 I prefer Menards, closest is 35 minutes away so I don't go often. But if I have a big project that's where I head. Better selection, better prices. Home Depot is about 5 minutes from me, so they typically get my business. I have a set of rigid power tools and they take care of be there. Plus, they have some "fascinating" younger ladies working there. Only time I can follow a pretty woman around and it's not considered stalking. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 9, 2017 Super User Posted August 9, 2017 Coin flip. Lowes and HD are across from the street from each other about 10 min from the house. So proximity is not a factor. I get the 10% military discount at both. Several years ago my impression was that you go to HD for service, Lowes for price. The price gap (if there ever was a real one) seems to have been closed. Unfortunately HD has managed to bring their service down to Lowes level, so ...coin flip. I am finishing up a MAJOR home flood repair (mostly contracted.) All three floors, all flooring, 2 of 3 ceilings, lots of drywall, etc. I'd estimate 40-50 separate purchases from HD and Lowes, combined. I will also estimate that upwards of 50% of those purchases were less than satisfactory. From missing parts, to broken material (hidden damage), to late shipments and inept CS. Lowes and HD have been equally disappointing. Quote
MacBassin Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Big ticket or tools: Lowes or HD because of the quality & 10% discount. There's zero comparison between Lowes / HD & Menards when it comes to lumber, though. Similar pricing but you pull right down the barn and load it directly and only once whereas Lowes & HD you have to pick it and load it on a cart, then deal with the cashier finding a tag and all of that BS, then you have to roll it through the parking lot hitting all the pot holes and then load it a second time. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 13, 2017 Super User Posted August 13, 2017 During our remodeling which is still going on it's who has the best prices. we picked out some four panel pine doors that the old farm houses had. They were on sale at a online mill for $99 each not prehung. Plus shipping which wasn't too bad. Locally they were $1,700 and not the quality I received from the mill in Montana. Shop smart 1 Quote
