Quarry Man Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 Last winter I was searching for a frogging rod. At a nearby fishing convention, I spoke with a Carrot Stix employee about which rod to get. She pointed me towards the 7' xh wild wild black. I was excited at first; however, now i realize it is too stiff and too short to use for frogs. I was thinking of using it for punching, big jigs, or swimbaits, but i never do any of those things. I might sell the rod, but wanted to know what you thought before i do so. thanks Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 15, 2017 Super User Posted July 15, 2017 If you do not have the right places to fish heavy jigs or punch I would suggest selling it and getting a good frog rod. Consider the Irod Genesis II IRG 754 Fred's magic stick or a Dobyns Fury FR 735C. My frog rod is a Champ series 705C just because I can not fit a 7'3 rod in my rod locker. It works great but if I could fit the longer rod I would go for the 7'3" to 7'5" Both of the rods I suggest were designed to do exactly what you are looking for. 3 Quote

Thanks for the advice, I am currently using a *** O M N in a 7'3" MH XF. I have 2and they work great for frogs and jigs. I put winn rod tape on the frog rod for more grip. Quote
Finnz922 Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 X2 on the Fred's Magic Stick. Also agree that the XH is a good jig rod in heavy wood or other types of thick cover. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 15, 2017 Super User Posted July 15, 2017 One - I don't think that 7' is too short for a frog rod. I wouldn't be that worried about it being too stiff. It is a Carrot Stix. I'd be worried about it being too brittle and easily breakable. I've owned a couple of Wild Black Carrot Stix for a few years now. I'm the only guy I know who hasn't broken all their carrot six. The main reason is that I'm not an exceptionally forceful hook set kind of guy. If it was me and I had the issue of not feeling that rod was right for frogging, I'd try again and buy a different frog rod. Then I'd re-purpose the Carrot Stix, at least until it breaks ( and sooner or later it is going to break, that is what Carrot Stix do ) I'd suggest that you put a decent reel on it with an adequate supply of 15 or 17 lb fluorocarbon and use it to throw heavier football jigs (half or 3/4 oz). In the clear water reservoirs in the Ozarks, it is a good idea to carry a heavy football jig rod all the time. It makes fishing the 15' to 40' points much more efficient, because you ain't waiting so long for the jig to drop. Another purpose for this rod might be for throwing Biffle Bugs. I've experimented with a number of different lengths and actions of rods for throwing Biffle Bugs (I generally throw the half ounce or 3/4 oz size) and I've found that a heavy action rod works best for me. I wouldn't sell the rod, that would be more trouble than it is worth. 2 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 There is an interesting article in the last Bass Angler magazine on a bass pro who is a real frog whiz and he always fished his frogs on a heavy rod, but one day mistakenly tied on a frog on one of his MH 7' rods and says he now prefers the MH rod because his hook ups improved considerably with the tip which gives more then a heavy rod tip. Go figure. Quote

It's long enough to bomb frogs and set the hook on the far end of the cast. Soft enough tip to walk 'em and moderate enough to fight 'em. Lastly it has more than enough backbone to drag 'em through the thickest slop. 1 Quote
mcfishing620 Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 I am kind of in the same boat. I have a 7 foot fast/heavy action St. Croix Legend Elite that is basically brand-new. I still debate back and forth on whether to keep it or not. Right now I am using it for underhand casting spinnerbaits around heavy timber. The power gets them out quick. 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 5, 2017 Super User Posted August 5, 2017 Frogs : 50-50 either you will like the 7' XH or not with #50 lb. ~ #65 lb. Braid... Could try a #15 lb. Big Game mono shock leader. Punching / Flipping through heavy grass : 100% ; #50 lb. ~ #65 lb. Braid. Big Spinner Bait / Big Jig / Big Under Spin / Big Vertical Spoon : 100% #15 lb. ~ # 25 lb. FC line. Wobble Head / Swing Jig : 100% #15 lb. ~ #20 lb. FC line. Big Worm / Heavy T-Rig for deep ledges : 100% #15 lb. ~ #20 lb. FC line. 1 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted August 5, 2017 Super User Posted August 5, 2017 7' XH rod? I'd use it at a MVA to stabilize a vehicle on its side.... 2 Quote

Forget what I said above except for the punching part - I would call that a SWAT rod : Your not coming out , so I'm coming in after you ! 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 14, 2017 Super User Posted August 14, 2017 A good rod at a good price is NOT a good deal if you don't use it. I've got a rod like that. If I can ever retire, MAYBE I can find a use for it. Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 15, 2017 Super User Posted August 15, 2017 7'6" MHF Villain rated 3/8-1 1/4 oz and 12-25# line. Barely casts 1/2 oz. spinnerbait a decent fishing distance. Tried a 1-1/2 oz. saltwater jig (cuz Dick's didn't have a 1-1/4 oz. one) and felt it was too heavy. I might ship it to Florida (along with another couple rods to make it worthwhile) and see if I can't fish some 3/4 oz. spinnerbaits and maybe a jig or two in the 5/8-3/4 oz. range. Really don't have much use for it up here. I'd rather use one of my 6'10" HF Quantum rods when I want to use something more than a MH. Over the winter I bought a Tatula 7'4" HF which is listed as a heavy frogging rod. Rating is 1/2-2 oz. which is basically the same as your Carrot Stix. I don't think it will see a lot of use, so 2 such rods would be one too many. Sorry. However, I'm glad you asked because it reminded me that I need to pick up some heavier frogs than what I currently have so I can make good use of this rod when I do take it out. Quote
